A Nightlife Guide for St Johns

If you are looking for a low-key, relaxing vacation, St. John is for you. At only 20 square miles, the island has only about 4,200 year-round residents. Despite its size, there is still quite a bit to do on the island after the sun goes downincluding small, friendly bars, live music and great restaurants.

If you are accustomed to the nightlife of St. Thomas, St. Johns sister island, youll be in for a surprise. While St. Thomas can be a party-hoppers paradise, St. John moves at a much slower speed. Relaxation and chilling-out are high on the list of priorities, not bar-hopping. So sit back, relax, and mingle with the locals.

Most of the islands nightlife is located in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. Duffys Love Shack in Cruz Bay was voted Best Restaurant by Frommers Budget Travel in 2004. At the Love Shack, you can relax at one of the indoor or outdoor decks, sip a Pina Colada and listen to the music being played by the DJfrom a tree house. The decks are connected by rope bridges, giving the shack a Swiss Family Robinson feel. Tuesday nights are Taco Night, where tacos are $1, along with $1 tequila shots and other drink specialties. If seafood is your thing, head over on Lobster Lunacy and King Crab Nights, every Thursday evening. Fresh, live Maine lobsters are flown in the evening before.

The Quiet Mon Pub in Cruz Bay is a warm, friendly Irish Pub. Enjoy quarter pound hot dogs, chili dogs and sloppy joes with your draft beer. The pub also has a cyber-caf so you can keep in touch with family and friends back home. If you go to St. John around St. Patricks Day, the Quiet Mon Pub has a parade every year, which they proudly label as the shortest parade in the world.

Skinny Legs, located in Coral Bay is known in the US Virgin Islands has being best Bar and Grill on St. John. The bar hosts special events throughout the yearincluding dances, concerts, plays, Halloween parties and volleyball tournaments. Although its not all they have to offer, Skinny Legs is known for their great mahi mahi sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs and salads.

If youre looking for a casual, fun bar that offers cute frozen drinks, head to Shipwreck Landing in Coral Bay. Drinks include passion fruit daiquiris and the shipwreck shake, which is a blend of vodka, irish cream, kaluha, pineapple and coconut. There is much more to eat than burgers and fish and chips herecheck out their conch fritters or blackened fish dishes. Wednesday night is jazz night. There is no cover charge.

Looking for a more romantic dining experience? St. John offers a variety of fine dining options ranging from Euro-Asian cuisine at Asolare in Cruz Bay to Caribbean cuisine at Paradiso in Mongoose Junction. No matter where you choose to dine, make reservations in advance to ensure a table.

Other great restaurants include Chateau Bordeaux, which serves Mediterranean cuisine and Tage, which offers a wide variety of artfully prepared dishes.
