The city of Louisville, Kentucky is home to a great number of historic sites and Museums. As a haven for 19th century architecture, you will find over 14,000 homes dating from the Victorian era in the historic districts of Louisville. Though these homes all date from the same period, many varieties of sizes and styles can be found. In addition, many of these homes have been turned into museums and historic attractions which you can explore. Louisville also boasts art museums, and museums related to the famous Kentucky Derby.


Historic Sites




If you enjoy a little exercise, take a walk along West Main Street in downtown Louisville. Youll find an abundance of beautiful limestone, brownstone, and cast iron architecture of the mid-to-late 1800s. Dont stop yet though; if you continue your walk along Main Street, youll discover many restored, and partially restored, multi-storied buildings, which create a feeling of traveling back to the 19th century. If you are more ambitious, get in your car and drive to the intersection of Main and Market Street. Here you will find more than 100 historic buildings. If you have a passion for cast iron architecture, Louisville is the city for you.


Historic Neighborhoods


When visiting Louisville in search of historic places, be sure to include the historic neighborhoods of Cherokee, Triangle, and Crescent Hill on your to-do list. Here you will find hundreds of square blocks of late 1800s to early 1900s homes and mansions. In the spring and summer months, there are many garden tours throughout these historic old neighborhoods. These tours are a great way of viewing Louisvilles historic homes up close and personal.


University of Louisville


The University of Louisville was founded in 1798, making it the oldest university in the city. The university is surrounded by beautifully preserved parkland and trees. Of particular interest is the administration building. Modeled after Thomas Jeffersons rotunda at the University of Virginia, and the Roman Pantheon, it stands as an architectural marvel and should not be missed.


Museums in Louisville


.The Filson Historical Society - Located at 1310 South Third Street in south Louisville, this building is a combination of both a museum and an archive. At the museum, you will find original manuscripts, letters, diaries, photography, maps, and portraits. Artifacts on display there include: Jim Porters hand, a genuine Kentucky still, a carving by Daniel Boone, objects from the civil war, and historic handmade quilts. The Filson museum was established in 1884, and it is itself an historical landmark in Louisville.


The Speed Art Museum - Located 2035 South Third Street in historic Louisville. The areas leading fine arts museum, here you will find thousands of pieces of art, covering over 6,000 years of human history. Collections include European paintings and sculptures, Kentucky collections of artwork, English Renaissance pieces, and much more.


The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum - No trip to Louisville would be complete without a trip to this historic mansion. Considered to be the most spectacular house in old Louisville, the Conrad-Caldwell mansion boasts Richardson- Romanesque architecture, which places it in a class of its own. When visiting this home, you will be impressed by its massive arches, swags, and decorative gargoyles.


Churchill Hill Downs Derby Museum - This site of the famous Kentucky Derby is rich in history and must be seen.
