Memphis Tennessee, the Home of the Blues, often brings music images to mind: a aged blues player strumming a guitar, a young Elvis swivelling his hips on stage, young hopefuls recording their first record in a remote studio. Because of its great musical heritage, Memphis nightlife is like no other town in the world. No matter what type of music you like C blues, rock-n-roll, soul, country, hip-hop C there is a nightclub for you in Memphis. Many clubs feature both local and national talent as well as DJs playing the latest hits.

There are clubs for all ages C some allow adults between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one (the minimum age required to drink alcohol in America). But, regardless of your age, be sure to have proper identification on hand. And some cash, most clubs do have a cover charge, especially if there is a live band playing.

If you like the Blues and live music, the Beale Street historical district is the place to visit. Stretching three downtown blocks, Beale Street features the best blues music in the world. There are nightclubs, art galleries, museums, restaurants and shops lining the street. Legendary bluesman B.B. King has a club, the B.B. Kings Blues Club that has the finest blues musicians and sometimes, even B.B. shows up to play. A Memphis legend, Ruby Wilson, the Queen of Beale Street, is also a regular. If you are into alternative, techno and house music, you can find Club 152 at the end of Beale. It is not unusual to see long lines outside the door of Club 152 as the patrons wait to hear popular up and coming local acts. It also features an oxygen rush bar with such flavors as mint-rosemary and sugar cookie. Travel a little further down Beale and you will find the Isaac Hayes Nightclub that has great food, great memorabilia and, of course, great music. Isaac himself often plays with the performing bands. If you are a hip-hop fan, check out Raifords downtown. Decorated like a 70s discotheque right down to the mirrored walls, it offers a DJ with the best variety of hip-hop, rap and dance music.

While Beale Street is the heart of blues music, midtown Memphis is the home of alternative bars, those that fall out of the norm. Located right on Madison Avenue, the P&H Caf has been a favorite for years. It provides a great combination of food, pool tables and drinks as well as a great local bar atmosphere. Tuesday nights are a blast for trivia buffs because P&H features a competitive team trivia contest from 8:00 pm until 10:00 pm. With its mixture of gay and straight, black and white, Amnesia is one of the more eclectic nightclubs in town. It offers different rooms for the different tastes. The dance floor is huge and usually filled with people. But, if youd like a more relaxed atmosphere, there is a piano bar. You can even take in a drag show. Looking for a classic Irish pub? Murphys is the place! You can hear live national and local music while sipping your favorite adult beverage. You can even play Texas Holdem poker for free on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Memphis is a town proud of its sports teams, so it only stands to reason that there are plenty of sports bars. Closer to the University of Memphis, you will find Newbys. It started out as a college bar, but Newbys has grown into a popular nightspot of Memphians from all over town. It might be the $2 burgers or the Red Bulls they sell or it could be the live music. They also have a twenty-foot television screen so you can watch University of Memphis Tiger football. Whether it is baseball or football, college or professional, the Fox and Hound English Pub and Grille has a wide selection of imported and domestic beers to drink while you watch national, regional and local sporting events in their arena room.

If you loved the hard rock hair bands of the eighties, you will love The Stage Stop. It features live bands and happy hour lasts until 10:00 pm. There are plenty of tables, but dont expect to be able to converse much with those around you C the music is usually hard, heavy and very loud. If you are a hip-hop fan, check out Raifords downtown. Decorated like a 70s discotheque right down to the mirrored walls, it offers a DJ with the best variety of hip-hop, rap and dance music. Wan to hear some good old country music? Youll love Hernandos Hide-a-way in south Memphis. This beer joint has been a favorite hangout for over fifty-two years and is the sometimes hang out of the Killer himself, Jerry Lee Lewis. No matter which bar you choose as your destination, you are sure to have a great time and hear some great music.
