This enlightened part of the United States has assiduously developed institutions for the Performing Arts. The local community has formed exemplary bodies to encourage interest in music, dance and opera. A most impressive feature of Santa Barbara is the outstanding architecture and environs of each of the major Theaters. Your celebration of the Art starts at your very entrance! The splendid summer is welcomed each year with the most enjoyable festivities that stretch in to the night. Theater and concerts should form splendid entrances in to every Santa Barbara evening and could remain as your most precious memories of nightlife anywhere. The local press is diligent to keep you informed of the daily offers and you can also call or drop in on a box office even just before a show.

The Center Stage Theater is aptly named for both the quality of its shows and the intimate auditorium. You will develop a new admiration for Santa Barbara and envy its residents after a visit here. The city symphony is housed in the beautiful Arlington Theater and should not be missed if there is a performance during your visit. The Lobero is the oldest Theater in continuous performance in all of California. The building is an architectural attraction in its own right, independent of the splendid performances that take place inside. The Music Academy of the West is another place that will impress even before the first curtain is raised, for its panoramic view of the Pacific and its verdant surroundings. Its host estate has been donated privately and is as eloquent a tribute to the community as is the work of its celebrated architect.

The Ensemble Theater Company celebrates its 25th year in 2005. The Santa Barbara Dance Alliance presents programs from various schools and promotes local choreographers. The Old Spanish Days Fiesta is held in August and celebrates the citys Hispanic heritage. Dancing with abandon to vibrant music in to the late hours of the night is an integral part of the festivities. The Summer Solstice includes a Gala Dinner and is a fine occasion to meet socially with the local populace. Summer also witnesses a fortnight of contemporary dance. The city has a Choral Society and an International Film Festival to add variety to the cultural calendar. These events are nuggets that can surprise the casual visitor and highlight a nightlife experience in Santa Barbara.

Do not lose heart if your nightlife style is of the Bar and Club style. Santa Barbara caters to the pub crawl habit in its inimitably organized way. A long succession of places full of music, spirits and company are strung like beads along the central State Street. The Blue Agave and Rocks are especially busy and full of young people on most evenings, while the Wildcat Lounge is liked by local celebrities and glitterati. The Forebird Caf has an exotic atmosphere of the Middle East and the Hades caters to the gay. James Joyce brings a piece of Irish Pub Culture to Santa Barbara, with live music, darts and loads of camaraderie to accompany a well stocked and most adequate bar. The Soho is also amongst the citys leading bars with live music all 7 days of the week. Sharkeez with a drink called the Shark Attack for its acute effect, served by a lady dressed as a Mermaid, is the kind of place where you may indulge in a fantasy, discreet and tasteful as you would expect of Santa Barbara.
