A Riviera Maya beach guide would include the beaches along the serpentine coastline found from Cancun to Tulum. The powdery beaches located on this coastline are Puerto Morelos, Xcaret, Playa del Carmen, Playacar, Paamul, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-ha, Akumal, Soliman Bay, Tankah Bay, Tulum, and Sian Kaan.

Puerto Morelos can offer the beach goers two different types of beaches. The beach located in the center of town remains natural with its smooth sand, but is not raked and the trash and excessive seaweed is not removed. The other beaches located here are north and south of this beach located downtown. These beaches are generally clean and raked, especially in the area of the resorts. All of these beaches offer snorkeling, swimming, restaurants, bars, boat tours, spa hotels, beach bungalos or hotels.

Xcaret, which has no outer reef break, is generally only inhabited by the sea turtles that come here to nest. There are no services on this wide expanse of sandy beach.

Playa del Carmen, located down the coastline from Xcaret, is a long stretch of sandy beach. The north end of this beach is the widest and has the resorts and beach clubs as well a jetty, which creates a small wave break. South of this jetty, the beach narrows as it leads to the ferry dock. This beach offers its guests snorkeling, water sports, beach bars, restaurants, a small outer reef break, villas, hotels or condominiums.

Playacars beach, located south of Playa del Carmen, is narrow south of Senior Frogs then widens as it goes farther south. This beach area can offer sandy beach, snorkeling, swimming, resorts, villas, condominiums with private beaches and a minimal outer reef break.

Paamul, located south of Playcar, is an excellent location for RVs as it offers a sandy beach mixed with a limestone iron shore. The facilities here include a dive shop and a restaurant. This beach provides diving, a sandy beach, beach bar, restaurant and an outer reef break.

Puerto Aventuras, a resort style marina community, offers its visitors a short, wide, sandy beach with plenty of pure sand for sunbathing as well as a reef break to slow down the incoming waves. This beach also offers snorkeling, swimming, a dive shop, beach bars, restaurants, water sports, a spa hotel and villas.

Xpu-ha, located south of Puerto Aventuras, is another wide beach with pure white sand and no outer reef break. Visitors here will find restaurants, beach accommodations, a dive shop and two big resorts.

Akumal has beaches on Half Moon Bay, Akumal Bay, Jade Beach, South Akumal and Aventuras Akumal. These beaches offer the tourist snorkeling, water sports, dive shops, beach bars, restaurants, kayak rental, hotels and villas/condos.

Soliman Bay, located south of Akumal, is a wide bay that is protected by an outer reef and has a nice beach and coconut grove. Visitors here will find a picture perfect community of beach houses with a palm-lined beach, as well as a restaurant. Snorkeling and kayaking are the most common activities at this location due to the outer reef break that controls the surf.

Tankah Bay, located south of Soliman Bay, has a narrow beach with crystal white sand. This beach allows its visitors to have a quick swim, a bite to eat, and a nice cold one while visiting this piece of a tropical paradise.

Tulum beach, with its wide powdery sands and turquoise sea, has no outer reef break, thus allowing for an unprotected beach and larger surf. The coast here is lined with bungalows, each with their own beautiful beach for sunning and strolling.

Sian Kaan is the beach closest to Tulum when traveling south down the coastline from Cancun. This beach area is actually included in a coastal biosphere reserve, which has been designed for sustainable usage by the public. This area offers no commercial services, just beaches, a bumpy road and the Boca Paila Bridge.
