Acne is a skin condition that affects areas of the body containing the largest oil glands, such as the nose, forehead, cheeks, chin, back, and trunk. It is caused by a disorder of the oil glands, called sebaceous glands, and results in clogged pores and outbreaks of lesions also known as pimples.

Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can be painful and can cause permanent scarring, which can be distressing for people who suffer from the condition.

Not everyone has the same degree of acne severity; therefore, treatments vary from person to person. Since acne attacks different people differently, the best acne cures for one person may not be the best acne cures for another.

The good news is that there are many modern treatments for acne which include medical, natural and home remedies. The first step in keeping your skin acne-free is by cleaning and keeping it oil-free. Do this by gently washing with soap and water twice a day, especially following activities that cause perspiration.

A dermatologist should be consulted if your acne is severe. He may prescribe tretinoin or accutane for acute cases, both of which are available only by prescription. If required, your doctor can prescribe a range of antibiotics in pill form, such as tetracycline. If you do not want to consult a doctor or dermatologist, find effective over-the-counter acne treatments such as topical salves and creams that contain benzoyl peroxide, or a five-percent solution of tea tree oil.

Blemishes can be dried up with a variety of acne products that contain salicylic acid, sulfur, or resorcinol, such as grapefruit juice. For serious cases, look for advice regarding nutrition, lifestyle changes, topical medications, and antibiotics that fight bacteria.
