If youre stuck in Central Texas with the family this summer, make sure to visit New Braunfels. This is home to Schlitterbahn Water Park, the nations top-rated water park. After all, it has won the Golden Ticket Award for Best Water Parks seven years in a row. At Schlitterbahn, the family can find relief from the hot Texas sun.
Schlitterbahn Water Park is located along the banks of the Comal River in Central Texas, between San Antonio and Austin. Some of the rides incorporate the rivers features into its design. This 65-acre resort is divided into two distinct regions with six themed parks. The older section of the park is known as Schlitterbahn West and is home to Wave Fest, Kinderlund, Das Lagune, and SlidenPlatz. Schlitterbahn East is a recent addition to the water park and is home to the more daring thrill rides in Blastenhoff and the beach paradise Surfenberg. A tram is available to shuttle visitors from one side of the park to the other.
If youre looking for dangerous, high-adrenaline adventures or mellow, family friendly rides, Schlitterbahn has them all. Enclosed within each themed park are thrill rides, family rides, and water playgrounds for all temperaments. Each attraction is rated on a four-grade scale based on swimming ability and rider control. The lowest graded rides are ideal for young children and take place in shallow bodies of water. The moderate thrill rides take place in pools of water that are up to four feet in depth and suitable for the adventure-averse riders. The aggressive and high-thrill ranked attractions require that the rider be a strong swimmer and that the rider have good physical control. Families will typically favor the moderate thrill rides.
The most popular rides in the park are the Master Blaster and the Torrent, located in Blastenhoff. The Master Blaster has won the Golden Ticket Award for Best Water Park Ride. It combines the roller-coaster element with the water experience. Riders in a two-man tube are propelled up to the top of Blastenhoff Tower with water jets. The riders are then blasted down a three-story plunge that takes them through twisting tunnels for a total of seven drops, culminating in a pool. The Torrent is a white-water rapids ride akin to the more traditional white water rapids rides like Big Foot Rapids of Knotts Berry Farm, but is family friendly, longer, and much more fun. Both of these rides are rated as a high-thrill, deep water ride, and are recommended for older children and adults in good physical health.
Schlitterbahn has several thrill-seeking slides that feature twists and turns that end in plunges to a moderately deep pool. These rides include the 6-story high Black Night, the Dragon Blaster which boasts of a 30-ft drop down a water fall in Surfenberg, and the side by side slides, Der Bahn and Downhill Racer. Boogie Bahn in Surfenberg is the boogie boarders dream. There is also another ride called the Sky Coaster, which at a height of 180 feet, is one of the tallest rides in the world. Riders on the Sky Coaster are required to pay an additional charge.
Young children can enjoy water thrills in a safe environment. The water playgrounds in Schlitterbahn have shallow pools covered with a rubber, granular padding and foam slides. There are also shaded seating areas to accommodate weary parents. Hansel and Gretels Great Adventure is located in the Kinderlund section of Schlitterbahn West and has several kiddie-sized water slides set around a story book theme. Located in a shady part of the park with picnic areas, this attraction is supervised by lifeguards so parents can relax and let the kids run about. Kinderlund is also home to the Polywog Pond, Tadpool, and an arcade. Young children will also enjoy Kinderhaven in Blastenhoff. This attraction is designed as a miniature pirate ship loaded with slides and water cannons and culminating in a shallow pool. Other kid-friendly attractions in the park include Squirt N Sliden in Surfenberg, and Lagoon Kiddie Park in Das Lagune.
There is a wide assortment of intermediate-level rides for the family. Older children with a semi-adventurous spirit will enjoy the Raging River Tube Chute and Hillside Tube Chute, both with relatively short drops into pools of water. Raging River and Hillside Tube Chutes are located in the Das Lagune section of Schlitterbahn West.
Schlitterbahn Water Park is a complete resort with restaurants and overnight lodgings on the premises. Accommodations are varied and include standard motel rooms, deluxe suites, apartments, and vacation homes with up to five bedrooms. Barbecue and picnic facilities are interspersed throughout the park. The park itself has restaurants that are a bit pricey for the type of cafeteria food they serve. However, the park allows home-brought foods and picnics in the facilities, so families can save considerably by bringing their own snacks.
Ticket prices at this water park are equivalent to those charged by the bigger theme parks, but all the activities in the park make this price seem more a bargain. Tickets are sold as a single-day, two-day, or 2-park season pass. The single day tickets cost $31.99 for adults and $26.99 for children. The two-day park tickets cost $50.99 for adults and $40.99 for children. The season passes are good at all Schlitterbahn Water Parks in Texas, and cost $106.99 for adults and $70.39 for seniors and children. Discounted tickets are available for groups of 15 or more.
Schlitterbahn Water Park has seasonal operating hours. They are open daily during the summer, and on weekends in the spring and fall.
Schlitterbahn Water Park is an affordable adventure-filled park that will provide hours of fun for all members of the family, as well as a long and cool respite from the summer heat in Texas. These are some of the reasons that the Travel Channel rated this park at the top of its water parks list. Visit Schlitterbahn and see for yourself!
