Want to get away from it all? Wyoming has some great camping spots, and its magnificent scenery and remote attractions keep visitors going back year after year. You'll think you're still in the Old West as you travel into areas with wild beauty and natural wonders such as Old Faithful, Devils Tower, and the Wind River and experience events like Indian PowWows, rodeos, fiddle contests, and mountain men festivals. Wyoming is what's camping's all about; here are some great places to pitch your tent or park your RV.

There are more than 20 camping parks in or near Yellowstone National Park. Fishing Bridge RV Park is one of the campgrounds located inside the national park; it has almost 350 sites and is the only park with full hookups for RVs. Although the park is very crowded at times, it is centrally located within Yellowstone, close to the visitor's center and museum, groceries, showers, laundries, and other amenities. The park is open from May until September, and rates run around $30 per night. Since Yellowstone is a very popular destination for campers, reservations are necessary and have to be made at least several months in advance. There are no tent sites available at Fishing Bridge, which is operated by Amfac Parks & Resorts; hundreds of tent sites are offered at many of the 11 other campgrounds within Yellowstone though.

Cody KOA is a great place to camp; its amenities are many and you'll be so relaxed there you'll want to stay forever. It has almost 200 sites for both tents and RVs, full hookups for RVs, a laundry, restrooms and showers, a store, swimming pool and hot tub, playground, and 20 cabins for rent. There are covered pavilions, a game room, trail rides, horseshoes and other games, and a gift shop. The campground is near restaurants and shops in Cody, and there's a rodeo each night in the summer nearby. If you're on your way to Yellowstone, this is a good place to stop; the eastern entrance to the national park is a little farther west on 20.

The Grand Teton Park RV Resort in Moran is only a mile from the Grand Teton National Park and a little more than 30 miles from the southern side of Yellowstone; the Snake River is also nearby. It's open year-round and has more than 200 campsites for both tents and RVs. There are also amenities such as a laundry, restrooms and showers, full hookups for RVs, a store, a heated pool and hot tub, deli and pizza service, and internet connections. This is a good location from which to ski, go on a float trip, snowmobiling, fishing, or horseback riding or tour the national parks. Snowmobile rentals are available in the park, and fishing licenses can also be purchased there.

The Country Campin' RV and Tent Park is located on a private ranch on the Big Horn River in Thermopolis. It's a smaller park with about 40 RV sites and 20 spaces for tents. The Big Horn River is great for fishing, and there's a boat dock at the park. The park also offers a laundry, restrooms and showers, full RV hookups, a playground, petting zoo, gift shop, and horseback riding on the ranch. Nearby attractions include Wyoming's Dinosaur Center and free mineral hot springs in Thermopolis. This is a very friendly, clean and quiet park, and free breakfast is offered on Saturday mornings.

Mountain View Campground in Sundance is near Devils Tower and the Black Hills, and it's open from April through October. It has 60 sites for RVs and 30 tent sites and offers full hookups for RVs. It offers amenities such as restrooms and showers, a heated pool, laundry, store, cable TV, and internet connections. Games such as horseshoes are offered, and there are playgrounds and a game room, plus an adults-only room and sports fields. The park is located off I-90.

AB Camping RV Park in Cheyenne is a good base for visiting the capital of Wyoming. It offers more than 130 sites for RV and tent camping, and has amenities such as laundries, restrooms and showers, a playground, covered pavilion, internet connections, full hookups for RVs, a dog run, and cable TV. It's conveniently located off I-80 and near attractions such as the state capitol, golf, and the trolley tours of Cheyenne. During the last ten days of July the Frontier Days Celebration takes place in Cheyenne, and since Cheyenne is the largest city in Wyoming, there are many others activities in which campers can engage. There are also several other camping parks in Cheyenne.

Fort Caspar was once a stop on the Oregon and Mormon Trails, and a reconstructed fort on the original site can be toured. Fort Caspar Campground in Casper is right behind Fort Caspar, and is located on the North Platte River. The park has 86 sites for RVs and 30 tent spaces, and it offers amenities such as full hookups, internet connections, cable TV, restrooms and showers, laundry, and a store. Recreational facilities include fishing ponds, a playground, shady picnic areas, a river walk, horseshoes, and a rec hall. The largest mall in Wyoming and the National Historic Trail Center are nearby.
