If you want to experience a little of the old West, then San Antonio, Texas is the place to visit. Once youve settled into one of the many beautiful hotels or area bed and breakfasts, you can begin exploring this grand city. Of course, San Antonio is famous for the Alamo, which is located in the heart of the city. The Long Barracks Museum and Library are located near the Alamo, and visitors can hear a narrative about the fall of this famous landmark. The Alamo, San Antonios first mission, was built in 1718, and more than 189 defenders lost their lives at this famous site.


Market Square and El Mercado are known as authentic Mexican markets. These marketplaces offer over 100 shops for visitors to browse through. You can find plenty of wonderful Mexican art and pottery, but dont forget to taste the delicious Mexican cuisine. At various times of the year, festivals are held here, also. Another unique arts and crafts area is La Villita. Visitors can make purchases from a variety of art galleries and watch artists work their magic. Tourists can also visit the Old San Antonio Exhibit in Bolivar Hall to view many historical objects.




There are several old missions that border the San Antonio River and comprise the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. The majority of these missions were built during the eighteenth century and remain just as majestic today. They include Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Of course, you wont want to miss San Antonios River Walk, also known as Paseo Del Rio. This river winds its way through the middle of the downtown district. Visitors can wander along its beautiful, tree-lined paths, visit the many shops and restaurants that border it, and float down the river in one of the many cruisers available.


There is plenty to see and do in this western city. The Guinness Book of World Records and Ripleys Haunted Adventure are located directly across from the Alamo. The Plaza Wax Museum and Ripleys Believe It or Not! Museums are also nearby. The Majestic Theater offers visitors an opportunity to hear the classic sounds of the San Antonio Symphony, and they can also experience many other concerts and events. Tourists enjoy taking a tour of the Spanish Governors Palace, which has been labeled a national historic landmark. Nearby is The Tower of the Americas, which is 750 feet tall and offers guests a view of the city below. There is a restaurant located 500 feet up in the tower. There are plenty of free contemporary art exhibits that are shown throughout the year at the Southwest School of Art and Craft, which is located in a building that was once a girls convent.


The San Antonio Botanical Garden gives visitors a chance to quietly stroll through its beautiful forest or enjoy the various flowering plants that change with the seasons. Guests can also visit the gardens conservatory, gift shop, and restaurant. The San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium has built a reputation as one of the premier zoos in the country. It has over 750 species and includes a mini-zoo that was designed for children under five.


Once youve experienced everything that the city has to offer, you might want to branch out to the surrounding area of San Antonio. Natural Bridge Caverns and Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch are both popular tourist spots. This cave is Texas largest and most spectacular show cave. Visitors can also pan for gold and gemstones. The wildlife ranch is a Texas version of an African adventure, complete with a petting zoo for the little ones. San Antonio, Texas is a wonderful city for the whole family to enjoy.
