Quebec is a beautiful province with many riches for the traveler to explore. The province is conveniently located to those in the American Northeast and, due to the exchange rate, very affordable for the American traveler. American travelers in Canada do not need a visa or a passport, but a picture ID (drivers license) is required at the border checkpoints. Visiting Quebec, you can get all of the charm of a European country without comparable cost.
Most people in the big cities are fluent in both English and French and welcome American tourists. Some cities, like Montreal, have a large English speaking population, while others, like Quebec City, have a small English minority. Deeper into Quebec, however, it is more difficult to find English speakers. Street signs are in French, so familiarize yourself with the basics before driving in Quebec.
There are many activities and attractions in Quebec for both the adventurous and cultural visitor.
Outdoor Adventures: Quebec has many large wilderness areas and parks, which accommodate many different outdoors activities. Quebec is an outdoorsmans paradise, with many lakes and forests accommodating the hunter and fisher. Sample activities for the adventurer include: skiing, snowmobiling, rafting and kayaking, camping, hiking, dogsledding, horseback riding, snowmobiling and nature tours. Popular areas for outdoors adventures include the Mt. St. Anne Region for skiing, Northern Quebec for fishing and the Laurentian region for rafting.
Montreal: Montreal is a cosmopolitan city which offers many options for fine dining, theater, museums, nightlife and shopping. You can spend many days enjoying the charms of this city which once hosted the Olympics and a World Exposition. Montreal is the site of many cultural festivals, including a jazz festival, a comedy festival and many film festivals. Popular Montreal destinations include the Isle of Notre Dame and the Isle of St. Helene, La Ronde amusement park, the Biosphere, Olympic Park, Old Town Montreal, the Notre Dame Basilica and the Old Port.
Quebec City: Quebec City is a beautiful European style city overlooking the cliffs of the St. James River way. It is the only city cited by UNESCO as one of the worlds heritage centers. Quebec City combines Old World charms with modern conveniences like fine dining, shopping and nightlife. Quebec City is North Americas only fortress city; the traveler can enjoy a carriage ride through the gates of the Old City. Popular destinations within Quebec City include the Hotel Frontenac, the Old City, the Capital and the Plains of Abraham. The city sponsors a yearly Winter Festival, with the celebrated Ice Hotel - a functional hotel made entirely of ice!
Montmorency Falls: Not far outside of Quebec City is North Americas highest waterfalls, the Montmorency Falls.
St. Anne de Beaupre: A famous pilgrimage site with an enormous cathedral, and a sculpture of the Stations of the Cross wending its way up a cliffside wall.
The St. Lawrence Sea way: The St. Lawrence sea way offers many diversions for the traveler and their family. The town of Malbaie offers a hotel and casino. All along the sea way, many companies offer whale-watching tours. The Museum of Beekeeping in Beaupre is one in a series of museums devoted to traditional Quebec folk art.
