A great escape with plenty of activities is Cape Canaveral. Part of Floridas Space Coast, Cape Canaveral is home to the Kennedy Space Center, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and Space Coast Stadium, residence of the Montreal Expos during Spring Training.
Kennedy Space Center and the Astronaut Hall of Fame bring the Space program up close and personal to visitors of all ages. A Maximum Access ticket allows visitors to partake in most of what the complex has to offer; and with the addition of optional tickets, a visitor can even have lunch with an astronaut.
Port Canaveral is a destination within itself. Visitors can view or cruise from the massive cruise ships that depart from the massive docks, or they can camp, fish, bike, boat, picnic, swim, surf, play in the sand or sunbathe at one of the many parks C Jetty Park is one of the favorites, with covered pavilions, fish-cleaning tables and even beach wheelchairs. Seafood is the specialty in the area and visitors will find numerous restaurants offering the freshest catch-of-the-day, direct from boat to kitchen.
Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge makes for a great escape. The Visitors Center is a great place to start, showcasing a small sample of wildlife to be seen on the Black Point Drive, a seven-mile auto tour. At the Center, visitors can pick up a free self-guided brochure, or they may purchase a cassette or CD to narrate their tour. Numerous wildlife exhibits are displayed in the Center and along the boardwalk; videos are available for viewing upon request. The gift shop is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir of your day.
Along Black Point Drive, visitors will spot numerous alligators, beautiful birds of all shapes and sizes and a variety of other wildlife among their natural habitat of the salt- and fresh-water marshes. A 5-mile hiking trail can be accessed midway through the drive, and the nearby parking lot provides a viewing tower of the surrounding area. Endangered manatees can be viewed up close at the Manatee Observation Deck.
Excitement is promised with a day of deep sea fishing or extended boat ride. Fishing and boating charters can be arranged from several locations in Cape Canaveral. Most of the fishing trips provide everything needed for a day of fishing and exploring, although sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, camera, lightweight rain gear and long sleeve shirts and pants are recommended. Miss Cape Canaveral offers fishing trips and boating trips year-round, except for Christmas Day and shark trips April through September.
For sports enthusiasts, Cape Canaveral is home to the Montreal Expos during baseballs Spring Training and to the Brevard Manatees year-round. Games take place several times weekly from April to September at Space Coast Stadium.
A fun destination in the area of Cape Canaveral is the Cocoa Beach Pier. This massive dock is the home to an assortment of restaurants, shops and amusements. The restaurants provide impressive views directly over the ocean; with a restaurant receipt, visitors can journey to the end of the pier for no extra charge. Rental equipment is available for fishing, surfing, body boarding, skimming and even sunbathing (chairs and umbrellas) while the surf and sand offer up delightful pleasures all their own.
Cape Canaveral allows visitors to soak up history, sun and fun while creating a lifetime of memories.
