Virgin of Assumption Cathedral: This cathedral is located in Guadalajaras historic center. Built in 1561, its architecture offers a variety of styles from Gothic to Renaissance. The cathedrals twin steeples were destroyed in 1818 but were rebuilt with the golden tiles that are seen today.
Inside the cathedral, a person should visit the solemn Virgin of Innocence Chapel. In 1786 the bones of a 12-year-old girl martyred in the 3rd century were discovered inside the catacombs under the Vatican. The remains of the girl were sent to Guadalajara in 1788 where they have remained on display under protective glass in the chapel.
Palacio de Gobierno: Located near the cathedral, a visitor will find the Palacio de Gobierno. This government palace was constructed in the 18th century and its interior walls are adorned with a number of remarkable murals. In front of the Palacio de Gobierno is the Plaza de Armas. The iron pavilion was constructed in Paris and brought to Guadalajara in the 19th century.
Degollado Theatre: The famed theater of Guadalajara was first opened on September 13, 1866. Renowned for its dcor, a visitor to the Degollado will be awed by depiction of Apollo and the nine muses that adorns the outside. Inside, a person will be equally impressed by the grand salon and marble columns. The theaters interior ceiling depicts Dantes Divine Comedy.
Parque Agua Azul: This massive park is located in the southern region of Guadalajara. The park is divided into two sections that are easily attainable via a bridge. A nature lover will be able to visit several bird, orchid and butterfly houses while music lovers can get a taste of the regional flare by visiting Musicians Boulevard. La Concha Acustica is also found in Parque Agua Azul. This is an outdoor auditorium. Almost everyday there are several performances showcasing the various cultures of the region.
A person should be sure to stop by the Archaelogical Museum of Western Mexico when he or she is visiting Parque Agua Azul. The museum is located adjacent to the park and offers a variety of exhibits. In the 1800s it was converted and used as barracks by the military. However, since 1918, the building has been used as the primary location for the Museo Regional de Guadalajara.
