Juneau has a rainforest climate offering beautiful and vibrant wildflowers and pristine terrain. Juneau was settled by the Tlingit and Haida Indians. Juneau is one of the most beautiful areas especially for viewing glaciers. Many outdoor activities are available including dog sledding, biking, kayaking, rafting, hiking, and snowboarding and skiing. Fishing, camping, and flight seeing is also available.
Many of the attractions in Juneau are nearby hotels, cruise ship and ferry docks. Chilkat Cruises and Tours runs weekend trips to and from Juneau. Orca Eco Tours Professional Whale Watching & Wildlife Tours offers year round tours and charters guaranteeing whale and wildlife sightings.
Mount Roberts Tramway is considered Juneaus best attraction. Entering at the visitor center in downtown Juneau you board comfortable tramcars beginning your 2,000-foot ride to a beautiful Mountain Complex overlooking Juneau. While at the Mountain Complex, you can watch a documentary entitled, Seeing Daylight depicting the life of the Tlingit Natives. The Complex also has a caf, bar, restaurant, two gift shops, and information about the walking and hiking trails in the area.
Saltwater fishing is a popular outdoor activity. Five types of salmon are native to the waters around Juneau C Coho, pink, and king are the most common ones and shellfish and halibut are plentiful.
The Macaulay Salmon Hatchery is a major producer of salmon for the area. At the hatchery you will have the opportunity learn about salmon and see over 100 different types of marine life all native to the Juneau area.
The Alaska State Capitol building houses the Governors office and legislative offices. Four giant pillars at the front of the building are made from Alaskan marble. Free tours are given of the capitol building during the summer.
The Federal Building houses the bureau of Indian affairs and has on exhibit native crafts. Juneaus State Office Building is a multi-story complex housing many state offices. The eighth floor has a plaza opening onto an outdoor balcony offering a beautiful view of the area. Also on the eighth floor, there is a fully restored 1928 Kimball organ.
Alaskas State Museum exhibits items relating to Alaskan cultures such as Tlingit, Eskimo, Aleut, Haida, and Athabascan Indian. You will also find displays relating to early Russian and gold rush history along with artwork from local and leading artists from Alaska.
Juneau-Douglas City Museum has as its main mission the preservation of Juneaus cultural heritage and values. The museum offers information, displays on Juneaus mining history, and features in front of the museum a four-story Totem Pole carved in 1940.
Early prospectors Joe Juneau and Dick Harris discovered Gold Creek and mined gold claims here. Joe Juneau went on to the Klondike and died there. In 1903, they brought his remains to Juneau. Dick Harris lost his claims and moved to Oregon where he died and in 1907, his remains were brought to Juneau. Today Gold Creek provides water for the city. Harris & Juneau Monument denotes the spot where Dick Harris and Joe Juneau camped while mining for gold.
Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure features fifty acres of Southeast Alaska's pristine, vibrant rainforest hosting breathtaking scenic vistas and lush landscaping. Trails and walkways take you to beautiful gardens, waterfalls, and ponds. The scenic vistas offer beautiful views of the Mendenhall Valley. Some of the native plants you will see are huckleberry, blueberry, ferns, mosses, dogwoods, and azaleas.
St. Nicholas Orthodox Church was built in 1894. It is an octagonal shaped building and the oldest Russian church in the area. The church displays Russian artifacts, vestments, icons, and liturgical books.
The famous Red Dog Saloon attracts thousands of visitors with its offering of artifacts and antiques. The saloon still has its sawdust floors and swinging doors.
