If you are looking to get away from the everyday hustle bustle of life, and you crave a trip that offers simplicity and cultural richness over malls and high fashion, Marie- Galente is the perfect vacation destination for you. French is the official language, but many of this islands natives speak Creole. Because of its round shape and mainly flat land, this island, which is just south of Guadeloupe, is also referred to as La Grande Gallette, which translates to Big Pancake. In recent years, Marie-Galante has gained popularity among tourists visiting the West French Indies.
The people who live in Marie-Galante live a lifestyle that is built on tradition and rural community. It is a tranquil and peaceful area, and the natives are friendly and welcoming. At night, they dance and sing and play traditional instruments. It is a style of entertainment that you are probably completely unaccustomed to, but the rhythmic, lively sounds will have you moving to the beat before you know it. The live music is one of the main attractions of Marie-Galantes nightlife. There is also a Caribbean club called Discotheque Touloulou that plays lively Caribbean dance music.
The beautiful land in Marie-Galante is ideal for hikers. You will be awe-struck by the perfectly green hills and valleys that you have to hike through. If you are going on a romantic getaway, Marie-Galante will offer you the loveliest natural hiking ambiance you have ever experienced. Since it is not rough terrain, you can walk hand-in-hand, enjoying the scenery and each other. It will amaze you how much open land you can find C open space as far as your eyes can see from many spots. One great hike to check out if you get the opportunity to travel to Marie-Galante is a trek from Grand-Bourg to the Murat Castle.
If sightseeing is on your to-do list, there are several attractions to choose from. The Au Mouillage Museum of Sea Transportation is an exhibition of the modes of transportation between Marie-Galante and Guadeloupe since start of the twentieth century. Another hot spot for sightseeing is the Habitation Roussel-Trianon, which has exquisitely-maintained stables and an impressive smoke stack from an old sugar refinery.
If you want to experience some of the cultural entertainment events, you could go to an oxen tug-of-war or to a cock fight. This might not appeal to some travelers, but it is legal and considered perfectly acceptable entertainment in Marie-Galante. They attest that they have great respect for the animals that they use for such events. The cockfighting season runs from December to June, and the oxen tug-of-war season runs from June to February.
If you are an art lover, there are a couple of galleries in Marie-Galante that are certainly worth visiting. The Armand Baptiste Sculpture Gallery has beautiful wooden sculptures, and they are especially proud of their ebony sculptures. The Art Gallery Alphonso is another good choice, and they display pictures and paintings by local artists.
The water surrounding this small island is clear and blue. If you like being in the water, you could go scuba diving during your trip to Marie-Galante. You could also take out a pedal boat, go kayaking, or take a relaxing chartered boat ride.
