The Northwest Territories in Northwest Canada is one of the most beautiful areas of land on the North American Continent. Its austere beauty, dominant and mammoth is one of our continents most pristine and wild areas. Civilization is not in control here, nature rules the land. From the seacoast to the lowlands and boreal forests, heavy tundra and staggering mountains make this land a treasure to visit. Aboriginal tradition still reigns in this land with fur trading, mining and exploration and rivers and forests crisscross the roads, which are few.
The Northwest Territories is one of Canada's most beautiful spots hosting the greatest rivers and lakes and important National Parks, rare wildlife, and millions of birds.
? Nahanni National Park, located along the South Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories is one of the most magnificent natural rivers in North America. Inside this national park you will find huge waterfalls, a limestone cave, and deep canyons. The park is also habitat for many wolves, caribou, sheep, mountain goats, and grizzly bears.
? The Northern Life Museum and National Exhibition Centre in Fort Smith displays a collection of artifacts pertaining to the history and people of the country. The museums natural history collection is continually updated. Also on available for touring is a collection of equipment used in or around the Fort Smith area. There are over 10,000 artifacts in the collection.
? Wood Buffalo National Park, Northwest Territories is located on the plains in the north-central region of the Territories. 44,807 square km. make up this park home the largest population of wild bison in North America. You will also find many whooping cranes at this park. It also boasts a large inland delta at the mouth of the Athabasca and Peace rivers.
? Old Town, Yellowknife hosts many trails, flower gardens, and beautiful Lake Niven. This beautiful area is home to many ducks and birds. There is also an area called Old Town. Gold miners worked this area way into the 1990s. The extreme temperatures in the artic area make it hard to keep the buildings from moving or shifting as the ground freezes and thaws. The materials used for footings go very deep into the ground reaching the permafrost area or bedrock area.
? Cirque of the Unclimbables, Northwest Territories is a small cluster of peaks and walls in the remote areas of northern Canada. It is near the border of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. One of the most well known climbs is the Lotus Flower Tower, which was widely publicized in the book Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. Mt. Proboscis is also in the Cirque of the Unclimbables. This is an awesome mound of granite that is the most well known climb in North America and very difficult.
? Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Yellowknife is home to a historical museum dedicated to preserving the heritage and culture of the Dene, Metis, Inuit, Inuvialuit, and non-aboriginal peoples of the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic.
