Portland, Oregon attracts millions of visitors each year due to its breathtaking scenic views and endless attractions. This City of Roses is ranked in the top 10 greatest places to live by Outside magazine. Portland has such a variety of activities that everyone has something to do. For wine-loving adults, there are over 20 companies that offer a wine country day trip. Adults spend all day leisurely sipping different wines from numerous vineyards and wineries. Another popular day trip is the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood. Visitors will enjoy the breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls and steep bluffs as they make their way to the historic Timberline Lodge or the Columbia Gorge Hotel. Located within these two popular hotel areas, are activities such as whitewater rafting, snowboarding and skiing.


If local events are on the agenda, visitors have another wide selection of activities to choose from. Both children and adults will enjoy the Childrens Museum. The large museum is filled with hands-on exhibits, activities and studio programs to explore. Toddlers and preschool aged children will learn how things work by exploring the tiny exhibits while the older kids make their own fascinating discoveries. Located just across from the museum is the Oregon Zoo, a Portland favorite among kids. From the heat of the Savannah jungle exhibit to the cold Alaska waters, these animals are sure to amaze everyone as they thrive in their own natural habitat. The zoo also has many shady spots to rest and a caf to feed the hungry crowds. Another spectacular place to visit is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMNI). Kids can dig up fossils, experience an earthquake, ride a submarine or ship and check out the theater. The OMNI has a science store where kids can purchase experiments or memorabilia from the museum. There is also a local caf that offers beautiful, panoramic views of the city.




If handmade crafts and homemade foods sound like a treat, visitors should explore the Portland Saturday Market. Comprised mainly of unique crafts and food, the market is always filled with artists and crafters who are willing to make friends and sell their things at a reasonable price. If visitors want to explore the beauty of Portland, then the Portland Classical Chinese Garden should be at the top of the list. The garden is filled with hundreds of authentic Chinese flowers and plants. Nestled among the beautifully landscaped paths and pavilions is the Chinese teahouse. The teahouse offers not only a variety of snacks, but also teas. Another fabulous garden is the Japanese Garden. It sits on 5.5 acres of land surrounded by mountains. The Japanese Garden also feature a teahouse and pavilions. The lighting and scenery throughout the garden depicts true Japanese culture.


A favorite among visitors is Portlands exquisite Pearl District. The Pearl District is Portlands premier shopping areas comprised of restaurants, art galleries, cafes, and of course, retail shops. Shoppers can stroll through the Pearl District admiring the wishing wells and fountains or shopping in the retail stores.


One of the most popular cultures in Portland is the upcoming gay community. Not only does Portland have its own gay residential areas, there are lesbian and gay themed performances, hotels, bookstores and recreational activities. Among some of the activities available are: hiking, skiing, camping, bowling, running and softball clubs. Portland also offers clothing optional beaches for the brave and daring.


Portland is no stranger to true adventure. Hells Canyon Adventures host trips of whitewater rafting, canoeing, or jet boat riding. Visitors can purchase just a few hours of activity or make their adventure an all day trip down the Snake River.


Lastly, visitors shouldnt leave without visiting the true beauty of Portland, which is its 37,000 acres of parks. Whether skiing, mountain climbing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or just walking, the true beauty of Portland is everywhere and its opportunities for fun are endless.
