Prince Edward Island is nestled on the eastern shores of Canada amongst the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Newfoundland in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River. Discovered and Settled by the French in 1763 and later joined by English, Scottish and Irish settlers P.E.I is rich with culture and history.
A must for any traveler to P.E.I is a visit to the north shore region commonly referred to as Annes Land. This region is the home of the inspiration for the famous tales of Anne of Green Gables written by L.M. Montgomery. But Annes Land boasts many other attractions as well: P.E.I National Park is home to beaches with soft, white sand. Take a scenic drive on Blue Heron Drive. Visit Kensington, the home of preserved Train Station and rail yards with shopping, historic displays and weekly farmers market. North Rustico Museum interprets the lobster fishery industry. And scattered through the region visitors can find other fun activities such as golfing, kayaking, adventure parks and deep-sea fishing.
Rainbow Valley is a 40-acre adventure/amusement park nestled in the Cavendish Resort area. Visitors pay one reasonable rate at the gate and enjoy all rides without the use of bothersome tickets or extra costs. There are six waterslides, three lakes for the use of pedal boats, a monorail ride, petting barn, playground, live and animated shows, game room, many other carnival-style rides and two gift shops with the quaint names of Castle Gift Shop and Flying Saucer Gift Shop.
Woodleigh Replica and Gardens is a British theme park in Burlington that is filled with replicas of castles and other British or medieval structures and culture. There are daily treasure hunts, Medieval Faire and Highland games.
Cruise Manada Seal Watching Tour is owned by Captain Dan and his wife. Cruise along the Montague River and Georgetown Harbor in the Captains diesel-powered boats. The captains boats canopied, safety-equipped and weather-proofed. Cruises leave regularly from May to September from the Montague Marina and last about 2 hours. In addition to seal watching, tourists can see celebrity cabins, lighthouses, historical cottages, and sail through mussel farms. Binoculars and cameras are recommended!
Sandspit Cavendish Beach is in the heart of P.E.I. and has tons of fun for all ages. Sandspit is an amusement park with fun attractions like go-carts, bumper boats, bumper cars, roller-coaster and other traditional carnival-style rides like the scrambler, tilt-a-whirl carousel and Ferris wheel. There is also a wide selection of kiddie rides, a railway that takes visitors through the park, arcade games and miniature golf.
Jacques Cartier Provincial Park is a must see beach. It was discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1534. This beach, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is a supervised ocean beach with nature trails, children's games, and hot showers. Jacques Cartier is one of the most beautiful beaches in Western Prince Edward Island.
Visitors with a more curious and eclectic eye can drive around and see the Large Canadian Roadside Attractions. Among them are: the sunflower-man mailbox, strawberry man, a giant bottle, a giant fiddle that is the size of a one-story home, the largest bridge girdle, the largest potato and even drive over the longest multi-span bridge.
Scattered about the island there are lighthouses to see, ferry rides to take, Bed & Breakfasts and five-star Inns for a comfortable and quaint stay, museums and historic homes rich with culture and history. For the sportsman there are a variety of water sports, swimming, boating, or deep-sea fishing trips can be booked in advance. There are also numerous other beaches like Anglo beach, Green Park Provincial Park, Fishermans Haven Provincial Park, Cedar Dunes Provincial Park, Cambelton Beach, Minnegash Harbor Beach and Skinners Pond Beach. The beaches provide swimming, beach-combing, nature walks, clam-digging and lots of beautiful scenery.
