Skagway, Alaska offers a variety of activities and attractions to fill your vacation with fun and excitement. Skagway was part of the great Klondike Gold Rush and offers a historical look at the era through recreations, re-enactments, and museum displays. Nature is abounding in this area and Skagway offers many trails that wind through the wilderness and cruise by Glacier Bay. And if you are vacationing on a tight budget, Skagway has many free attractions that can be fit easily into your vacation itinerary.
The first thing you should do is to stop by the Skagway Visitor Center and pick up: walking tour maps, trail maps, and the general guide to Skagway Skaguay Alaskan-Guide to Skagway. These tools will help narrate your adventure in Skagway, and will keep you from missing any of the sites and attractions.
WALKING TOUR OF THE TOWN
You can get to most of the sites and attraction in town by walking. Here are a few places you wont want to miss:
1. The Historic Boardwalk of Broadway is located in the Historic District. National Park Service Rangers are happy to give you a guided tour of the area and answer your questions.
2. Klondike Gold National Park Visitor Center is located on 2nd and Broadway. Here you can watch Days of Adventure/Dream of Gold.
3. Downtown there are many specialty shops that offer special and unique treasures.
4. The Trail of 98 Museum is found in the City Hall and has excellent displays on Eskimo and Indian artifacts, and the renowned McCabe Train display.
NATURE AT ITS BEST
The Chilook Trail, located in the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, runs 33 miles. You can book a 3-day or 6-day guided excursion that follows the same route explorers and treasurer hunters took during the gold rush. Youll encounter relics left behind by the thousands of men and women that used the trail on their way to the gold. To get back to Skagway after your adventure, there are boat and train services available that can get you there in comfort.
If you want to experience the beauty of the countryside but dont want to camp out, try booking a trip on one of the last remaining narrow gauge trains in the world. You can take either the White Pass or the Yukon Route.
Glaciers can be viewed during a flight-seeing tour of Glacier Bay. These trips usually last about an hour and a half. Many flight tours are scheduled throughout the day, so fitting one into your schedule is easy.
MUST SEES
Days of 98-Soapy Show is a definite must see in Skagway. This show has been entertaining visitors for the last fifty years and recounts the adventures and escapades of Jefferson Randolph Soapy Smith who was the prominent resident in Skagway during the Klondike Gold Rush Days. The performance includes cancan girls, a shoot out, and a realistic portrayal of Soapy. Shows usually run at 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and the evening program begins at 8 p.m.
Another tour that shouldnt be missed is the Klondike Gold Dredge Tour. This tour includes chances for you to pan for gold, peruse the gift shop, and learn the history behind the dredge by watching the critically acclaimed video on the history of the dredge and the Wild West adventures of the Klondike Gold Rush.
