If youre planning a vacation to the Caribbean, visiting the beautiful island of Tortola should be near the top of your list. Located about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico, Tortola is the crown jewel of the British Virgin Islands, with some of the most gorgeous beaches and stunning island views anywhere, as well as easy access to some of the best underwater vistas in the British Virgin Island. Its both relaxing and invigorating, with many different things for visitors to see and do.
No visit would be complete without enjoying some of the incredible diving and snorkeling this island has to offer. The best places on Tortola to snorkel are on the northwest coast at Cane Garden Bay, Smugglers Cove and Brewers Bay. Of these, Cane Garden Bay has the most spectacular stretch of beach, but the best bet to experience some great coral reef snorkeling can be found at Brewers Bay. The water is clearer in the Bright Virgin Islands than in most other locations in the Caribbean, providing great underwater visibility for viewing fish and other marine life. Plus, since Tortola is sheltered by the surrounding islands, the ocean tends to be quite calm, making snorkeling the clear green water both effortless and relaxing.
These ideal ocean conditions also make Tortola one of the worlds premier sailing destinations. If youre an experienced sailor, you can rent a boat and explore some of the neighboring islands on your own. For the sailing novice, there are many charter excursions or day sail options available leaving from the harbor in Road Town, the capital city of Tortola, or from Sopers Hole in the West End. With steady winds and calm waters, sailing in the BVI is the perfect chance to test your sea legs with a relaxing sail to one of the nearby scenic spots, many of which are accessible only by water.
For those wanting to stay on dry land, there are many places to visit that showcase the natural beauty of the island. One such place is the J.R. ONeal Botanic Gardens. A cool, peaceful oasis in the center of Road Town, this four acre garden is filled with lush tropical plants and wildlife. Part of the British Virgin Islands National Parks system, the garden is made up of pathways that wind through a miniature rain forest and fern house, a series of smaller gardens featuring cacti and succulents, palms, orchids and hibiscus, and a cast iron fountain filled with lilies. Several different species of tropical birds have made their home in the garden, as well as a rare red-legged tortoise. Its a great place for a leisurely stroll or to simply sit and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Another popular outdoor location is Sage Mountain National Park. Rising to an elevation of over 1,700 feet, it boasts the highest peak in the entire BVI. At the upper elevations, you can see traces of a primeval rain forest as well as some amazing views of the surrounding islands and cays. With many well-marked trails throughout the park, its a great place to go for a hike and enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the scenic lookout points.
After taking in the sights and sounds of the island, you may be ready to relax at one of the local hangouts. Like most sailing destinations, Tortola has a variety of lively watering holes that are popular with both visiting sailors and locals. Some of the most colorful can be found in Sopers Hole, an anchoring spot located in the West End that manages to retain its laid-back West Indian charm while also serving as a hub of sailing activity. The main ferry terminal is here, as well as several restaurants, a marina and a shopping wharf. Taking up a seat at one of the restaurants to enjoy a cool rum drink and a relaxing dinner while watching the boats come in is a great way to finish off a fun-filled day in Tortola.
