If you are planning a trip to South Africa you will want to spend some time in its largest port city, Durban. Durban has a lively feel that most South African cities dont have. Here you will experience a variety of cultural influences that the city has had throughout its long and exciting history. Another great feature of the city is that most people speak English, so you wont have to hire a translator, or buy a dictionary for use during your stay, and because Durbans mild climate, you can plan a comfortable visit at almost any time of the year.

#1: The Phezulu Safari Park C This popular tourist attraction provides hours of entertainment including: native dancing, artifact displays, cultural re-enactments, and the valley of 1000 hills.


#2: The Beaches C You wont want to miss spending time on the beautiful beaches of Durban. Catering to the needs of visitors, the beaches have been fitted with changing rooms, food vendors, restaurants, pubs, and water sport shops.


#3: The Golden Mile C The Golden Mile is 6 km of entertainment located just off the beach. Here there are amusement parks, food stands, bars, and discos waiting to entertain visitors. Here you can also buy a ride on a rickshaw, or take a ride on the helicopter flip, or even listen to live music concerts from Durbans open-air symphony orchestra.


#4: Durban City Hall C Durban City Hall boasts of a number of cultural and contemporary entertainment venues. Constructed in 1910, the building reflects modern Renaissance style both inside and out. It is home to the Durban Art Gallery and displays both international artwork, and South African artwork collections.


#5: Dolphinarium: The Seaworld of South Africa, the Dolphinarium hosts marine wildlife like seals and whales, in an exhibition that caters to the enjoyment of children and adults alike. To get to this attraction, simply take the underground tunnel from the Golden Mile to the Dolphinarium.


#6: Jumma Mosque: The Jumma Mosque reflects the Muslim influences Durban has experienced, and is the largest and most beautiful example of Muslim architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. To find the Jumma Mosque just travel west of City Center.


#7: Muckleneuk: This building is home to three pivotal African art and literature collections: the Killie African Library, the Mashu Museum of Ethonology, and the William Campbell Furniture Museum.


#8: The Crocokraal C This restaurant gives an authentic taste of Durban with local cuisine. Other local favorite spots to eat include: the Spur, Something Fishy, The Ulundi, the Famous Fish Company, Stairway, Christinas, Victoria Bar, and La Dolce Vita.


#9: The Playhouse Complex: Offers five theaters of live entertainment to chose from, that perform both classical and contemporary pieces. Check out the latest issue of Whats On in Durban for the current venue. If theater is your cup of tea, you may also want to visit the Elizabeth Sneddon Theater, the Langoustine Theater-by-the Sea, the Natal University, the Courtyard Theater, the Backstage Theater, or go to the beachfront and enjoy the Amphitheater. #10: Valley of 1000 Hills C Take R103 to Bothas Hill to view the Valley of 1000 Hills. A beautiful view of wildlife and landscape merge to give visitors a glimpse into the past splendors of Africa.
