Atlanta has a hodge-podge of activities for families with children! Besides the well-known amusement parks (Six Flags, White Water and American Adventures), there are sights and sounds to attract every child.

In the downtown area, the Center for Puppetry Arts is a unique experience, both educational and entertaining. There are a variety of plays presented throughout the year for children, teens, and adults, with education as the Centers main goal. Study guides are available to enhance the learning experience.

The Center also has a museum and several workshops available. The museum showcases the history of puppets, while workshops allow students to create their own puppets and learn about puppets in other cultures. The Center for Puppetry Arts is located in midtown at the corner of Spring and 18th Street. The ticket sales office may be reached at 404-873-3391.

A fun place to eat while downtown is legendary C The Varsity. Serving chili dogs, hamburgers, fries, onion rings, fried pies and their homemade Frosted Orange specialty for over 75 years, the Varsity is an Atlanta tradition and has expanded to five locations. It is also an experience to visit C either inside, or curbside. Good-humored employees shouting out, Whatll ya have? Whatll ya have? Have your money in your hand and your order on your mouth! as you enter the bustling establishment. Photographs of many famous visitors to The Varsity line the walls, and the dcor is reminiscent of the 50s era of chrome and laminate. If the kids like plain hot dogs, theyll get a kick out of ordering a naked dog and wearing the free souvenir paper hats! Just dont leave town without trying one of their famous fried pies!

The Varsity is located at 61 North Avenue, just across the Interstate 75/85 Connector from Georgia Tech University.

The World of Coca-Cola? is another fascinating and entertaining site in downtown Atlanta. Kids and adults alike will talk about all the free cola samples at Coca Cola? C not only that it was free, but that it was served way cool! A huge room filled with hoses shoots different flavors of Coca-Cola? products into cups for samples. Coca-Cola? memorabilia is displayed throughout the facility and is sure to bring back memories of days gone by. The World of Coca-Cola? is located adjacent to Underground Atlanta, at 55 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, 404-676-5151. Their hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from Noon to 6 p.m.

Do the kids love TV, but hate the news? Well, a CNN tour could change all of that! The guided tour allows visitors behind the scenes, offering a variety of demonstrations of how the news is actually put on the air. A favorite demonstration is the weather map! Reservations are recommended for this 50-minute tour, but some walk-up tickets are also sold. Children under four years of age are not allowed on the tour. CNN is located at One CNN Center, Atlanta. For reservations, call 404-827-2300 or 1-877-4CNNTOUR.

For children 8 and younger, a great place to visit is Imagine It! The Childrens Museum of Atlanta. Its located near CNN and Coca-Cola so plan accordingly. At Imagine It! your children will touch, pull, open, close, drop, spin, drive, splash, draw, dig, paint, set-up, pull-out, push-in, poke and twist until they drop! The special exhibits at the museum encourage the children to explore and learn about the world in which we live, in a fun and creative atmosphere. Imagine It! is located at 275 Centennial Olympic Park Drive NW

Atlanta.

Another unique place to visit in Atlanta is the Cyclorama. Located next to Zoo Atlanta, the Cyclorama is a fascinating learning experience about the Civil War. It features the worlds largest oil painting The Battle of Atlanta, a 365-degree mural. Visitors view the painting from tiered seating in a circular theatre while a narrator tells the story, assisted by special lighting and motion guiding you through this battle in 1864. A museum with war artifacts is part of the admission price, but the painting is definitely the star of the show. The Cyclorama is located at 800 Cherokee Ave. S.E. Atlanta.

Kids will love climbing to the top of Stone Mountain. The 583-acre granite mountain allows visitors to climb up marked paths, or travel to the top by way of cable car. Around the base of the mountain a variety of amusements can keep any family busy for a long period of time. Camping, swimming, tennis, miniature golf, riverboats, waterslides, trains, a car museum, an antebellum plantation, and the all-new Tree House are just SOME of the activities available! A one-day all-attractions pass is the best way to take advantage of all the park has to offer. Stone Mountain Park is located 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, Atlanta has an abundance of options. Piedmont Park near downtown Atlanta is a favorite destination. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (For more information, please call the Visitor Center at 678-538-1200) features numerous picnic areas, 50 miles of hiking trails, year-round fishing, and a variety of boat rentals.

With such a variety, Atlanta can help a family create memories for a lifetime.
