Detroit offers great attractions for children and their families. The attractions are located all over the Detroit area and depending where you will be in Detroit, you will want to cater your destinations accordingly. Here are some of the major attractions in the Detroit area as well as a guide at the end for more attractions and events that you and your family can enjoy while in Detroit.
The first attraction that immediately comes to mind for a kid is the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, MI. It is a place to experience nature in a way that leaves a strong impression for years to come. Also in this great zoo is a beautiful playground for children of all ages. Pack a picnic or get a meal while youre there, its all the family fun you can handle in one location.
The next all-day attraction for kids is The Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. There is a world of history in this attraction with Henry Ford and his inventions to many other pieces of history that most only get a chance to read about. Here children (and adults) can see first hand the many inventions and history of creative thinkers that have had great impact on the way we live today.
The Michigan Renaissance Festival, located in Holly, MI, is another all-day attraction for the whole family. This attraction is available in the August to September months. A wonderful way to experience life as it was in the Medieval Times. The Childrens Realm and Enchanted Forest is sure to thrill your child with the experience of becoming an Official Knight!
Hess-Hathaway Park on Williams Lake Road in Waterford, MI is perfect for all children. The park is actually a fully functional farm with animals and a unique playground; all children can play on the equipment as it was designed for those with special needs as well as those without. Every child of every walk of life can have a great time at this place.
Detroit also offers vast areas devoted to being one of several Metro Parks. The parks offer beautifully maintained playgrounds, running/biking paths, picnic areas, and water access for paddle boating and playing (where available). The parks have something for everyone and every activity and are located throughout the Detroit area, so no matter where you are there is always a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch or an all-day retreat from the city life.
When the rough weather does not allow for the enjoyment of outdoor activities in Detroit, there are several local YMCA locations throughout the Detroit area. If you are already a member of the YMCA then, through the AWAY (always welcome at YMCAs) program you can enjoy any participating facility in the area, if you are not a member then there will be a day-fee.
