Family vacations are challenging enough to plan and execute. This year, consider visiting Georgia. With much to see and do, The Peach State has plenty of fun and excitement to offer to vacationers. Take some of the stress out of those plans this year by considering these family attractions and activities before mapping out your itinerary.
Atlanta is home to Six Flags Over Georgia C one of the members of the Six Flags family. Chock-full of thrill rides, including The Great American Scream Machine, Looping Starship, High Striker, Great Gasp and Lickskillet Sky Buckets C to name a few C this magnificent theme park will provide a day full of bone-chilling excitement. For the younger set, theres Carrot Carnival, Bugs Bunnys Playfort, Rockin Tug and Up, Up & Away - plus lots more. Shows and festivals riddle the parks calendar, in addition to the rides. A variety of shops and food areas are also available to the general public, for those times when youd like to take a little break from the excitement of the rides. This is a very large facility, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes C theres lots of walking to be done!
Another attraction that this city offers is The Childrens Museum of Atlanta C a facility thats dedicated to fun exploration for kids from age 8 and up. Among the many interactive exhibits are Tools for Solutions, The Morph Gallery, Town Square and Leaping into Learning. Special programs are also offered on a daily basis. Your children will enjoy painting on the walls, making their own musical instruments and learning to build their own patio C all in all, a day of fun and excitement that the kids will never forget! The city of Atlanta has much to offer in the way of family entertainment, and this is one of the best overall attractions for spending a day of wholesome family fun.
The Kangaroo Conservation Center in Dawsonville, Georgia is a delightful place to take the children! Boasting the largest kangaroo collection outside of their native Australia, this tourist spot offers lots of excitement for the entire family. Ride through the animal enclosures on an Army truck, visit the Kookaburras and learn the proper technique for throwing a boomerang. Youll also experience the ins and outs of this working farm as you accompany professional staff members on a complete tour of the facility. Be sure to bring your camera C there are some great photo opportunities of the gorgeous mountain backdrop, as well as the animals themselves! Being very flexible, the Conservation Center staff will be happy to provide a personal tour for a single individual or a large group - whichever applies.
Wild Animal Safari, located in Pine Mountain, offers an up-close look at animals from all over the world. Whether you choose to drive your own car or hitch a ride on the Zebra Bus, youll see animals from all over the world saunter by and try to get a peek in your window. If you should opt for the bus tour, plan on spending approximately an hour. For those who prefer to drive their own vehicles, you can take your time and really enjoy the safari experience. A variety of park vans (in assorted sizes) are available for rental for families who prefer to park their car and ride in a roomier environment. Some of the areas that youll visit are Giraffe Hill, Rhino Riviera and Cat Condo, spread out over this 500 acre park. Special events are offered every day during the summer months; the list of events can be found in the main concession area of the park.
Columbus, Georgia is host to the Coca Cola Space Science Center C a magnificent facility that offers multiple exhibits and activities. Among the numerous exhibits are the Space Shuttle Orbiter, the Apollo Capsule, a spacesuit, the Mars Exhibit and a Space Shuttle Stack. The Challenger Learning Center offers kids the opportunity to go on a simulated space mission, with programs that include Encounter Earth, Return to the Moon and Rendezvous with a Comet. Also available is the Omnisphere Planetarium Theater C a domed room with tilted seats that allow you to relax and watch a spectacular show in the night sky. The Center provides a variety of special events, as well as the program Star Watch C folks join together to get a look at the constellations and attempt to identify particular heavenly bodies. The Mead Observatory C connected to the Coca Cola Space Science Center C also runs special programs for the general public, and even provide specialized cameras and video equipment so that folks can take celestial pictures.
In Cleveland, Georgia, youll find Babyland General Hospital C birthplace of the original Cabbage Patch Kids. This wonderful facility resembles a real hospital, offering special exhibits including The Fathers Waiting Room, the Nursery, the Preemies, the Newborns and the Surgical Area. Older Cabbage Patch Kids can be seen boarding the bus for elementary school further on in the hospital, and again in their classroom. Other scenes include the school cafeteria, the school playscape, the Christmas Room and The Magic Crystal Tree C where you can watch an actual delivery of a Cabbage Patch baby when you hear a special announcement over the sound system. Kids will even get the opportunity to learn what determines whether each baby will be a boy or girl! If you should decide to adopt one of these little ones, a nurse is standing by to perform the Oath of Adoption before taking that special little bundle of joy home. Moody Hollow General Store is on site for those of you who wish to purchase Cabbage Patch souvenirs. Full of fun and exciting displays, Babyland General Hospital is sure to delight kids of all ages!
If the members of your family like ghost stories around a campfire or scary movies, theyll love to take part in a ghostly tour! Carriage Tours of Savannah offers nightly ghost tours, which will take adults and children on a spooky ride through the streets of Savannah, Georgia. Youll learn all about the local ghost legends and colorful characters who have come back to haunt this historic town. There will be plenty of opportunities for chattering teeth and shaky knees as you roam the darkened streets in a horse-drawn carriage, driven by a guide that looks a bit frightening. This is a great nighttime activity for kids who arent easily frightened. Tours are available four times each evening, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Marietta, Georgia is home to White Water Park Atlanta C another in the Six Flags chain. This is a magnificent waterpark thats perfect for a hot summers day. Among the many rides are The Cliffhanger, Tornado and Run-A-Way River. Wildwater Lagoon, Slippery Ridge and Pine Valley are areas of the park that offer attractions such as Lizards Tail, Deer Park Plunge, Bermuda Triangle, The Famous Bermuda Bob-Slide, The Atlanta Ocean Wave Pool and the 3-Story Tree House Island. Theres something for all ages at this huge Six Flags facility, and youll find that its an all-day activity. Just dont forget the sunscreen!
