Savannah, Georgia is one of Americas most historical cities. It is a wonderful place to experience world famous southern hospitality. Even though it is known for is history and romantic spots, Savannah can be a great vacation spot for the whole family.

Savannah is located close to the Atlantic Ocean and is right along the Savannah River. Many children enjoy a river boat ride that starts at the popular Riverfront Plaza in historic Savannah and heads out towards the mouth of the river to the ocean. Its fun for kids to watch the riverside go by and see the barges entering the Port of Savannah as they make their way up and down the river. Dolphin and Whale watching cruises are also fun and depart often during the day from the same locations along the riverfront.

Since Savannah is close to the ocean, the beach at Tybee Island is always a great destination for those traveling as a family. On Tybee there are miles of golden sand, playgrounds and eateries catering to all kinds of patrons. Tybee also boasts an 18th century lighthouse as well as a museum dedicated to the history of Savannah and its surroundings. The Tybee Marine Science Center offers many interactive educational experiences for children, teaching both kids and adults about the fragile ocean ecosystem and how to protect sea life. Fort Pulaski National Monument is also located on Tybee Island. Fort Pulaski is an old civil war era fort that has been brought back to life for visitors to experience a little of what Americas Civil War was like. Children are given the opportunity to be a junior park ranger which familiarizes kids with the United States Park System. Additionally, there are many charter boats tours that depart from Tybee Island throughout the day. Children are sure to enjoy themselves in this area of Savannah.

In the heart of historic Savannah is the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. This museum has many programs for students and younger visitors including instruction about scrimshaw and creating merchant signs as well as learning about the many vessels that ruled the seas throughout the years. The museum is actually in a historical building named Scarbrough House which was completely refurbished in 1997. Scarbrough House is also home to the largest garden in historic Savannah. Even children will be impressed by the blazing colors blooming in the peaceful retreat within the city.

The Mighty 8th Air Force Museum is another fabulous and interactive place for families to visit and connect with the past. The 8th Air Force was vital in the U.S. victory against Germany during WWII. Many of the museums displays bring the past to life and bridge the gap from generation to generation. Children can view many of the accomplishments of their great-grandparents in a manner that history books cant convey. If a family can only see one place in Savannah, make The Mighty 8th Air Force Museum the one.

There are quite a few other venues to see and things to do while visiting the Coastal Empire of Georgia. There are several daytime and evening tours that ferry touring families from site to site. If your children are a little older, there are the many Haunted Savannah tours. Savannah is widely considered to be one of the most haunted cities in America and these tours show visitors why. Some of the tours are informational but many others have an entertainment side to them, employing actors to engage the audience in fun but still telling the story of those that cannot find peace in another realm.

Last but not least, when you check in to your hotel, check out the visitors rack in the lobby. Its usually loaded down with activities and sites to see within a 100-150 mile radius. You might want to take the family on a daytrip to Jacksonville, FL to see the world famous Jacksonville Zoo or up to Charleston, SC to see Fort Sumter where the civil war began. Regardless of what you plan on, be prepared to do a lot and have fun!
