A family vacation to Tucson Arizona can be filled with exciting discoveries of both old and new treasures located in our vastly growing city. Rich in Old West history, Tucson has historical destinations to explore as well as many other adventurous places children will find both exciting and fun without realizing theyre being educated at the same time.
Outdoor fun
Colossal Cave Mountain Park C Located near Vail Arizona, this mountain park is truly exciting to explore. These are dry caves that remain seventy degrees year round and house some of the most amazing formations throughout.
Activities include C touring the caves, exploring the park via horseback, experiencing the Butterfly Garden that houses all stages of butterfly larvae, a desert tortoise exhibit, picnic in the park or plan an overnight camping adventure.
Old Tucson Studios C A historical movie location thats been the backdrop for movies like Young Guns, Tombstone, the Three Amigos as well as countless episodes of television series like Little House on the Prairie, Bonanza and was home to High Chaparral to name a few. In 1995, nearly 40 percent of the attraction was destroyed by an arson fire but has subsequently been rebuilt. The park remains a constant for those who desire a trip back in time to experience the old west.
Activities include- tours, performances and many shows that take place in various settings throughout the park. Guests can participate in many different activities as well as dress in costumes for photos or just for play.
Water Parks C Tucson has two area water parks, Breakers Water Park and Justins Water World. Both offer refreshing outdoor fun with millions of gallons of water and many different sized water slides. Breakers water park is about 20 acres and houses a good variety of different areas for swimming and water play tailored for both advanced swimmers and little tykes. The park has ramadas and shaded areas for picnics and relaxing. Justins Water World is similar to Breakers with many areas and options for water play, as well as shaded areas for relaxing. With both parks, youll want to call ahead for their open dates and pricing.
Reid Park Zoo C Located in central Tucson, the zoo is home to many animals including the most recent additions of both a Grevy zebra (known for their thin stripes and as members of the endangered species list) and a spectacled bear (known for the white, sparsely placed markings found on their coats).
Activities Include C Guided tours, special events and a zoo school.
Science and the Arts
Flandrau Science Center C Located on the University of Arizona campus, the planetarium houses some of the best hands-on exhibits, laser light shows, gem and mineral exhibits and a high power telescope for star gazing. The center has light shows daily and special evening shows orchestrated to music. The Flandrau science center has long been an exciting attraction for young and old alike, and is especially fascinating to children with the indoor auditorium in which the laser shows are presented.
Tucson Childrens Museum C Located in downtown Tucson, the museum is a treasure trove of all things exciting to both young and older children. With donations,both monetary and otherwise, the museum has grown to include many different exhibits to appeal to a greater audience.
Activities include C Dinosaur exhibit, underwater exhibit, bakery and farmers market where kids can shop, purchase and then eat fruits and veggies, a news broadcast desk enabling kids to see themselves on TV and give a news or weather broadcast, tour of various emergency vehicles and an area filled with IBM workstations for computer activities.
Other notable attractions
For indoor family fun, Tucson has different kid centered establishments for bowling, video game playing, go cart races, miniature golf, and batting cages. Funtasticks, Golf and Stuff, and Bedroxx Bowling Center are all filled with many different activities that boast things to do for all ages.
