Kayaking and rafting are very popular in Haines and you can take a rafting trip on the Chilkat River traveling through the Bald Eagle Preserve. What a wonderful way for the whole family to catch the breathtaking beauty of Chilkat Valley, wildlife in their natural habitat, and the magnificent bald eagles that feed on salmon in the Chilkat River.
Haines has several artists living in the area. Many of them are world class. You will find many galleries in the Haines area:
? John and Sharon Svensons gallery, Extreme Dreams is located just outside Haines near Chilkat State Park featuring flame worked glass beads, pendants, earrings, single beads, glass mirror mosaics, and artwork.
? Judy Neels Windspirit is located across from the Haines Visitor Center and features art from dealers, gifts and cards by type and occasion.
? The Far North Gallery owned by artist Sue Foletti is also located across from the Visitor Center, features the finest in Eskimo art, and is the only exclusive Eskimo art gallery in Alaska. They cater to only native art forms such as carvings, artifacts, and masks.
Haines is home to many eating establishments for the whole family:
? The Chilkat Bakery and Restaurant is family oriented dining featuring fresh baked goods, a soup and salad bar, and special menu foods every Friday night.
? 33 Mile Roadhouse located on Haines Highway and also the last gas stop before Haines Junction offers breakfast all day and is said to have the burgers in Alaska.
? Bamboo Room Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner featuring burgers, espresso, sports bar, and Alaskan seafood located downtown Haines.
Haines offers many places to stay while visiting:
? Mountain View Motel has nine ground floor rooms in the historic Fort Seward district. It also offers kitchenettes, color TV and some of the most reasonable rates in town.
? Fort Seward Condos are completely furnished one and two bedroom apartments that overlook Lynn Canal. They have fully equipped kitchens and are open all year with parking. They do not allow pets; all utilities are furnished, and reasonable rates by the day, week, or month.
? Thunderbird Motel offers 6 kitchenette apartments, and fourteen rooms. They have cable TV, private baths and phones in all rooms. You are within walking distance to many restaurants, grocery, and shops.
? River House Luxury Vacation Cottage is a private cottage located one mile from downtown Haines. It offers beautiful views of the Chilkat River, a full kitchen, smoke free, a sauna, and families are welcome.
? A Sheltered Harbor Bed and Breakfast gives a breathtaking panoramic view from its waterfront location. It has five new rooms that are spacious with private baths. They offer color cable TV with remote and phone. They are open year around and offer a home-style all-you-can-eat breakfast. There is also a free shuttle to the ferry and airport.
? Chilkat Eagle Bed and Breakfast is open year around offering comfortable rooms in a historic landmark area with views of Lynn Canal and Portage Cove. They have a TV lounge, a kitchen is available and you share a bath. Beds are queen, doubles, full, and twins. Children are welcome and they have an all-you-can-eat breakfast.
? Captain's Choice Motel is claimed to be Haines finest lodging spot. They offer TV, phone, private baths, a refrigerator, and coffee and tea. They are located near the center of downtown Haines.
The Sheldon Museum & Cultural Center will let the kids discover the treasures of the Chilkat Valley and experience the culture and art of the Tlingit Indians. They are open all year except for Saturdays in the winter. You will re-live the early days of Haines and find many treasures in the Museum bookstore. Haines Airways offers one-hour trips to see the sights from the air. They have courtesy vans available and Alaska Nature tours offer a variety of tour options to bring you up close to the diverse wildlife of Alaska.
The Chillkat Bald Eagle Preserve is named the eagle watching capital of the world. Nearly 3,000 bald eagles gather along the river north of Haines during October to January to feed on salmon. Haines is not your normal family vacation spot with theme parks and water parks but it is a vacation spot that will bring lasting memories for old and young alike.
