School is out and it is time to choose a family summer vacation spot. But how do you decide where to go? How much can you spend? What kinds of things does everyone in the family like to do? How old are your children? These are all questions you should be asking yourselves when deciding where to go for your summer vacation.
The choices are endless. Dude ranch vacations have become extremely popular lately. They offer chances to horseback ride and burn marshmallows at the nightly cookout. If relaxing on a beach is more to your liking, there are beaches all over the world that offer a variety of activities. Theme parks continue to be very attractive choice to kids and they have things for mom and dad to do, too. A family trip to a national park where you can camp, hike, see wildlife and discover nature could be very memorable.
If your family is like most families, everyone has a different idea of where they would like to go. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to be able to have his or her first choice. Sit down as a family and talk about what each person would like to do on their vacation. There are a lot of choices out there. Once the family has brainstormed some ideas it is time for mom and dad to crunch the numbers.
Decide how much vacation you can realistically afford, keeping in mind that it almost always ends up costing more than you think it will. Factor in the basic costs like travel, hotel, meals and attraction fees, as well as money for small accidents, extra snacks, and lost items that need to be replaced or someone will have a complete meltdown. There are always costs you didnt plan for when you vacation with children.
Once you have an idea of possible places to go and how much it will cost you, narrow down your choices to one or two. Gather the family back together and vote. Try to pick a destination that will allow the family to do at least one thing on everyones list. Select a place that has things to do for every member of the family.
Travel agencies have realized that family vacation destinations are a competitive market. Shop around when you book travel, hotel and car rental accommodations. Ask for discounts. No one is going to volunteer discount information and you might be surprised at some of the discounts available just for the asking. Book things you absolutely dont want to miss ahead of time, such as popular tours or golf tee times.
Plan your itinerary loosely. The point of the vacation is for every to have a good time, not wear everyone out so much they need to have a week to recuperate when you get home. Keep in mind your childrens ages and meltdown points. If you plan to do and see too much, no one will have a good time. Part of vacation is playing things by ear. If everyone would rather stay in the pool than go see a local attraction, stay in the pool. What will matter the most is that you are having fun with your kids.
Before you go on your trip, remember to do a few things. Purchase travel insurance, which is usually a good idea when traveling with children. If you are going out of the country, check with the foreign embassy to see if any shots are needed and get your passports at least six weeks in advance. If one of your children is on medication, pack extra just in case. Discuss what to do if someone gets lost.
Vacations are a time to build memories with your family. Try not to stress about anything that does not go as planned. The more relaxed you are, the better time your kids will have.
