Michigan is known as the automobile capitol of the world, but it is also known for its cherry production and The National Cherry Festival draws thousands of visitors each year to celebrate this fact. The festival first start in 1926 and it has grown to include over 150 events during the first week of July. For eight full days, visitors will enjoy sports competitions, pie eating contests and parades. If tasting every type of cherry and any cherry concoction isnt enough, there are also tours of the local cherry orchards planned throughout the festival.
The Detroit Festival of the Arts is a three-day event held each year in the middle of June. Entire blocks and neighborhoods come alive with music, performances and artistic expression as thousands of visitors enjoy the performances and interactive events. The music and dance are an eclectic mix from all over the world, with workshops and activities that encourage visitor participation. The festival is located at the Cultural Center of Detroit and is free to the public.
The Comerica TasteFest is an unusual festival the never fails to draw crowds. For five days in June and early July, visitors get a chance to taste foods and recipes from nearly 50 Michigan restaurants and vendors. The festival is free, but they do have food-tasting tickets that can be purchased throughout the event. Held each year in Detroit, the TasteFest provides shows and demonstrations for young and old alike.
The Michigan State Fair has been delighting visitors for decades. For 2 weeks during the month of August, the fair entertains and educates with hundreds of events, competitions, art exhibits and daily parades. The State Fair in Detroit gets bigger each year as thousands flock to attend to free concerts, play games on the midway, or just enjoy some of the local foods at the numerous vendors throughout the event.
Winter in Michigan is a magical time, and nowhere is it more evident than Winterfest in Mackinaw City. In the month of January, the Mackinaw community gets together to celebrate winter on a large scale. This three day event includes some of the most widely recognized winter activities such as snow sculptures and sleight rides, but it also hosts a few of the most unusual and sometimes hilarious events you will find anywhere. The events include buffalo chip ice hockey, frozen chicken bowling and ice fishing. There are numerous competitions for children as well as adults as well as the famous chili cook-off.
No visit to Michigan would be complete without a visit to the North American International Auto Show. This Detroit event is held annually in January and displays cars from the most widely known and respected automobile manufacturers in the industry. In addition to the many cars on display, the food court includes a stage with live music by a variety of performers. The North American International Auto Show hosts a poster contest each year and the results and winners are displayed at the festival. These posters highlight some of the most talented young artists from school all over Michigan.
