Many a web designer has come and gone, seeking to create websites professionally. The problem is many don't realize that designing websites professionally is more than simply creating websites. We will go through the steps of creating a successful web design business, from obtaining the appropriate documents to actually making the site. This is not a guide to HTML and will not tell you how to make websites; hopefully you already know how to do that.
The first step in running your own web design business is a plan. Decide what services you plan to offer; web design, scripting, hosting, even content writing? Think about who your target clientele is going to be. You absolutely cannot answer this question with "everyone," which is a huge mistake many web designers make. Target a specific group of people, such as local small businesses who are not yet online. Write your plan down and refer to it repeatedly - make sure your website is designed around your target group.
The second step is the nitty-gritty work. You'll need legal documents, and if you don't have them, you're likely to regret it. Not all cities require a business license, but if yours does, get one! In most cases, you can get a sole proprietor license which is relatively easy and inexpensive.
You'll also need a contract written up. This is what lawyers do. You can also find online example contracts, just be careful with them as they are in lawyer speak.
Now comes the part we all love (or should, anyway). Designing your website! Many of you may have done this beforehand - that's okay. When creating your website, remember who your target group is. This is important! This may be the most important thing to remember.
Why is it so important? Because a website is essentially a marketing tool. A business website is created to increase sales, to market a company and/or products, and this is something you're going to have to spend a lot of time learning how to do well if you don't already. Most people who browse the web don't read, they skim. Use emphasis on important terms, don't clump everything up into big paragraphs, and get to the point!
Well, now that that's done with, we come to our fourth step. Marketing yourself. You may need to do some research on Search Engine Optimization - this is a very useful thing to know. If your target is small businesses locally, send out flyers, go in and talk to the owners, join your Chamber of Commerce, and most importantly, tell everyone you know about your new business. One of the best marketing tools is word of mouth - use it!
Becoming a successful web designer is not always easy, there's so much competition out there. But at the same time, it's a profession that is only growing in need as more and more people and companies move online. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is important - this is not a venture that you need to do alone. All designers stepping into the professional world of web design make mistakes and encounter difficulties, but if you make great websites, find a good niche, and learn to market yourself, it's really not that hard.
