Fishing in Mississippi is popular among anglers year round because if the states mild climate. Fishermen have plenty of opportunities for various types of fishing. They can choose from one of the many lakes, or they can head to the coast for an extreme sport fishing adventure.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks run twenty-four lakes throughout the state. The state is divided into six districts, and five of the six districts have at least one lake for visitors to use. District One has Elvis Presley Lake, Lake Lamar Bruce, Lake Monroe, Oktibbeha County Lake, and Tippah County Lake. Each of these lakes offers boat ramps and boat rentals. Some of the lakes limit boats to trolling speeds only.

Lake Charlie Capps is located in District Two. This lake has earned a reputation for its premier bass population. Because of its shallow water, there are many stumps, brush, and tree tops that attract a variety of fish. Crappie is also caught in cooler weather. Boats are limited to trolling motors here.

District Four has ten public lakes. Kemper County Lake is Mississippis second largest state fishing lake. It is home to an abundance of largemouth bass. You dont have to have a boat to fish this lake. There are two public fishing piers, and many fishermen enjoy catching bream off these piers.

Lake Claude Benet, Simpson County Lake, and Lake Tom Bailey are all popular bluegill and bass fishing lakes. They each have fishing piers and boat ramps. Anglers also enjoy fishing from the banks of these lakes. The largest state run fishing lake in Mississippi is Lake Bogue Homa. Largemouth bass are often caught at this lake, along with sunfish and crappie. There are handicap fishing piers, and there are also boat ramps to accommodate virtually any size fishing boat.

District Five is home to four state run lakes. These include Lake Bill Waller, Lake Columbia, Lake Mary Crawford, and Lake Walthall. Lake Bill Waller covers over 200 acres and has yielded several trophy sized largemouth bass. Channel catfish are becoming increasingly popular in Lake Columbia. Channel catfish, along with sunfish, bass, and crappie, are also caught in Lake Mary Crawford.

District Six has only one state run lake, Lake Perry. This lake, located in the southern part of the state, first opened in 1961. The lake has a variety of fish, including large shell crackers, bass, and catfish. Lake Perry has a great shoreline for bank fishing, but there are also boat ramps available.

Of course, fishing isnt limited to the many area lakes that cover the state. The gulf coastline of Mississippi offers sport fishermen plenty of opportunity for surf fishing or chartering one of the many coastal fishing outfits. Some anglers simply frequent one of the many marinas or yacht basins. Schools of bass and bream can usually be caught here.

If you long for an offshore adventure, there are plenty of charter boats with experienced captains ready to take you out to sea. Fish that are caught in the coastal waters include king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, red snapper, flounder, grouper, sheeps head, shark, bonita, trout, and cobia. Biloxi and Ocean Springs are two of the coastal cities that have several outfits available for rent.

There are several barrier islands that border the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf of Mexico, including Cat Island, Ship Island, and the Chandeleur Islands. Kayak fishing is becoming increasingly popular around the Chandeleur Islands. This is an effective method for fishing the shallow waters and lagoons that surround the islands.
