If exciting saltwater fishing in a beautiful setting is what you are searching for, then search no more! Baja, California has plenty of brilliant blue water that is home to a vast amount and variety of fish. It has become one of the premier fishing spots in the world.
Cabo San Lucas and Loreto are both excellent places to fish. Even though Cabo San Lucas, the gateway to Baja, has evolved from a sleepy, fishing village into a beautiful resort area, it has still maintained its small village atmosphere. Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas offers anglers the choice of fishing the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Cortez. The waters meet just off the coastline. This makes fishing here a unique experience.
The temperatures are quite different in the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez, and where they collide creates water that has a third temperature reading. Since all types of fish, even bait fish, have very distinctive likes concerning their environments, this variety of waters offers many types of fishing. Because there are several deep canyons just off the shore of Cabo, the movement of the water creates an upswell of nutrients, attracting baitfish and their hunters. The canyons are not very far from the harbor, and this means that fishermen can begin fishing very quickly.
There are plenty of outfitters available in Cabo San Lucas to take you deep sea fishing. Tuna, dolphin, shark, swordfish, and marlin are numerous, and some of the richest marlin tournaments in the world occur here. Famous fishing banks include Golden Gate, Gordos, and San Jaime. However, you can also fish from the shore for species such as amberjack, mackerel, jack crevalle, and ladyfish.
Located on Mexicos Sea of Cortez, Loreto has earned the reputation as one of the finest areas to light-tackle fish. Yellowtail and roosterfish are easily caught in the waters off of Loreto, especially around Isla Coronado and Isla Carmen. Again, there are plenty of charter outfits to take you out to sea for fly fishing, trolling, and casting. Yellowtail are one of the most common fish caught in the waters off of Loreto. If you have your own boat, you can launch from the ramp that is located at the north end of the town in the new harbor. If your boat has a deep draft, however, you should probably not launch at low tide.
One of the best reasons to fish in and around Baja is that it doesnt matter what time of year you visit, the fish are still plentiful. Sure, many fish prefer the warm waters of summer, but the southern tip of Baja provides a tropical plethora of fish, also. The sun shines almost every day here, and winter temperatures average around 75 degrees. The cooler months usually bring calmer waters, and there are many sheltered areas to fish that are close to the shore and away from the sometimes brisk, northwesterly winds. Wahoo, striped marlin, skipjack, and dorado are commonly caught in the winter months off the coast of Baja. So if you are looking for a wonderful fishing adventure any time of the year, you need to head to Baja. The weather and the fishing are almost always perfect.
