Myrtle Beach is well-known for its beautiful beaches, but plenty of anglers find that the fishing is fine there, too. You might want to begin your fishing excursion with a trip to Cherry Grove Fishing Pier, a visit to one of the two state parks, or go out with an experienced captain on one of the many charter boats available. If inland fishing is what you are looking for, the Intracoastal Waterway provides plenty of opportunity to fish, also.
The Cherry Grove Fishing Piers claim to fame is that a world record tiger shark and a record tarpon were both caught here. The pier does charge an admission, but you will not need a fishing license to fish. Piers are usually excellent places to fish because there is so much marine life around the pier, and that attracts larger fish. You can choose to cast out or fish straight down to the bottom. Generally, most experienced fishermen recommend using fresh bait. You can check with the local bait shops to find out which fish are biting and what bait to use. Some of the fish caught at the pier include pompano, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, sea trout, red drum, and flounder. Many people also enjoy crabbing from the pier.
If you want to leave the shore and venture out into the ocean, there are many charter fishing boats available. A deep sea fishing excursion is a one of a kind adventure that shouldnt be missed. You can sign up for a half day or entire day trip. Some charters also offer night fishing. Some of the fish that are caught on these charter trips include sailfish, king mackerel, tuna, wahoo, and marlin. Dont worry about tackle and bait. It will be provided by the crew.
Myrtle Beach has two state parks in the area, Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park. You can fish from a pier or surf fish at Myrtle Beach State Park. Some of the many fish caught include flounder, spots, drum, blues, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, trout, and whiting. At Huntington Beach State Park you can surf fish or fish from the jetties.
The Intracoastal Waterway runs parallel to the coast and is fed by many rivers and creeks. Flounder is often caught in the mud flats of the waterway. Waccamaw River is one of the rivers that are popular for catching bream and bass. There are also several inlets that are great for fishing, also. Both Cherry Grove Inlet and Tubbs Inlet are small but usually provide ample opportunities for catching flounder, especially in the spring and summer.
Little River is another popular fishing spot just outside of Myrtle Beach. Here you can rent your own boat and search for a great fishing hole, or you can travel the river on one of the many party fishing boats available. Be sure to visit the historic Little River Village while you are there. Whether you want to plan a leisurely day fishing from a pier or shore or venture out into the seas in search of the big one, Myrtle Beach has it all. You can fish year round in this beautiful coastal paradise.
