Maybe you are a Texas resident or just a Texan at heart. Well, rodeos arent the only activity to enjoy in Texas. Fishing opportunities abound from the Gulf of Mexico to Texas beautiful rivers and lakes. There are many areas on the coast of Texas that provide ample opportunities to hook that big fish. You can venture into the ocean on one of the many charter outfits available, or you can fish from the shore or along one of the many fishing piers up and down the coastline. You can begin along the northern section of the coast at Port Arthur and travel the shoreline all the way down to South Padre.

Port Arthurs Sabine Lake is an anglers paradise. This lake is approximately fourteen miles long and seven miles wide and has plenty of areas to fish. It empties into the Gulf of Mexico and is a saltwater lake. This lake is known for its huge flounder and redfish populations. Speckled trout are usually plentiful there, too.

Galveston Bay is another popular area for fishermen. There are many charters available to take you on half day to full day trips or night fishing excursions. Some people like to explore the waters of the bay in kayaks, canoes, or small boats. Others like to wade into the bay and surf fish. If you are fishing offshore, you might hook kingfish, shark, or snapper. If you are in a small boat nearer the shore, you might catch redfish, ling, or mackerel. If you are wading, you could hook trout, reds, drum, or flounder.

Freeport and Matagorda are two more excellent areas for coastal Texas fishing. In Freeport, many fishermen like to fish the jetties for redfish and flounder. The Matagorda area boasts good sized redfish and trout. Corpus Christi is well known for its fishing piers and the Oso Bridge. Many anglers have reported catching sand trout, redfish, croaker, and black drum. Corpus Christi Lake has two boat ramps and ample opportunity to fish from the bank. It is an excellent fish habitat and home to bass, catfish, sunfish, and crappie. It also has a lighted fishing pier, and many fishermen are just getting started when night falls.

Fishing isnt limited to the area around the coast of Texas, however. The South Texas Plains region has areas such as Calaveras, which boasts good sized channel cats, and Braunig, where large redfish are often caught, along with striped and black bass. Many people also like to fish Choke Canyon for crappie and blue catfish. The Hill Country of Texas has the Colorado River in Colorado Bend State Park. Here anglers can catch several varieties of bass and catfish. Canyon Lake has blue catfish, yellow catfish and channel cats, along with black bass.

The Panhandle Plains region of Texas has numerous places to fish. Anglers fish the White River area for crappie and walleye. In Wichita, many anglers fish the dam for white bass and hybrid striped bass. Some of the best fishing can be found in the Prairies and Lakes regions of Texas. Cedar Creek, located in Athens, Texas, has plenty of weed covered coves, and these areas are home to schools of largemouth bass. Located not too far from Tyler, Texas is Lake Palestine. This large lake covers approximately 25,500 acres and is home to catfish, crappie, sunfish, and bass.

Finally, the Piney Woods section of Texas has several areas of interest for anglers. The larger lakes include Livingston, Lake Fork, and Caddo. There are many bait shops, boat ramps, and public facilities in and around these lakes. Fishermen report catching bass, catfish, bream, and many other types of fish. Whether you want to explore the coastline or travel to one of the many different regions of Texas, youll find plenty of opportunities to fish this great state.
