Everyone has heard all about the wonderful highlights of a sea cruise. Balmy sunshine, breath-taking sights, and gourmet dining promise a relaxing and delightful experience. If you're thinking about taking an ocean voyage but you're not sure how to prepare for it, here are some tips that may help:

1. Compare cruise package deals. For example, you may want to pay a bit more for the luxury cruise than save a few dollars on the deluxe package, or however they are organized, in order to get a little better service or a wider variety of entertainment options. Don't settle for the first deal that's offered. Ask about choices and compare company offers to get the best deal.

2. Map your itinerary. Even though the cruise company may send you an advance program outlining your ports of call and site-seeing excursions, plan your own schedule to decide which ports you will spend more time in and which excursions you plan to take advantage of. Make a note of locations, contact information, and arrival or departure times so you can share it with family members in case of an emergency.

3. Pack for all contingencies. Whether you're headed to the tropics or for the Alaskan shore, ask for a list of recommended clothing and accessories, which will depend on the time of year you visit and the usual seasonal climate. Understand that there may be unexpected weather fluctuations, so bring along an extra jacket or a warm-weather outfit in case the temperature does flip-flops during the trip. Dont forget over-the-counter medication for motion sickness (or seasickness) if you are prone to this condition.

4. Find out if friends or family members are interested in going along. Group discounts may be available for parties of a certain number, so ask in advance of paying your fare. Even if there is no discount, you can have fun going with someone you know as long as you have good boundaries and clear understanding that you may wish to do some things differently, like taking certain side trips.

5. Make sure the company is reputable. Most well-known organizations of this type are, but recent epidemic-type illnesses on board some ships have left questions in potential customers' minds. Ask about safety precautions, health protections, and anything you can do to minimize risks of illness. Depending on which ports you visit, check with your doctor about the possible need for immunizations or prescription medication in case of exposure to illness.

6. Learn something about the cultures you will be visiting. A few language expressions, a custom or two, and the rate of currency exchange will help toward your shopping expeditions in those regions. You also can visit religious temples or shrines, houses of government, or historic sites if you know where to find them and work them into your excursion schedule.

Taking a sea cruise can be an even better experience when you plan ahead by checking into related areas like those mentioned above. Give yourself plenty of time to plan ahead and make the most of this exciting vacation getaway.
