Alaska might not be the first place that comes to your mind when you are considering making plans for a romantic getaway with your loved one. Although it does not offer the beaches and tropical drinks that many of the popular island destinations do, Alaska has numerous activities that cater towards a couple on a romantic trip. Here are some ideas of what to do once you reach this northern state.
Alaska can be enjoyed both in the cold weather and in the summer months. In all seasons the wilderness of Alaska is a major drawing point for couples. In this giant state you can see polar bears, humpback whales, moose, grizzly bears, bald eagles, and many more rare creatures in an undisturbed environment. Nature walks, bird or bear watching, moose gazing, and whale watching could be just the ticket for you and your special companion. In the southwest corner of the state you will find Kodiak Islanda perfect place for peaceful and inspiring nature viewing. Here you will find the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, which covers most of the Island. The brown bears dominate the landscape and are protected by law on the island. You can take private tours of the island and witness the beauty of the untouched natural world and its fierce inhabitant. An off the beat spot worth checking out is the Pribilof Islands. Here you will find the worlds largest fur seal population in action. The islands offer a peaceful and quiet getaway for you and your mate.
In the northern part of the state you can visit Nome and St. Lawrences Island. Here the bird watching is unparalleled. There are also several Inupiat Eskimo villages that are fun to explore in this area. You may consider timing your trip so that you catch a glimpse of the finish line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The race takes place the first Saturday of the month of March annually. If you miss the race do not fear, dog sledding rides are available from October through the end of spring.
If you are not a snow lover then you will want to venture into the core of state during the summer. In this region of the state you will find Fairbanks and the North Pole. At Fairbanks you can take the opportunity to attend the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics if you come in July. Here the community competes for the public in a variety of games and dances and outside participation is encouraged during the celebrations.
If you and yours are the adventurous type you can go flightseeing. The views from the heights of the intimidating Mt. McKinley are impressive and surreal. You can land on a glacier, on the lake, or explore the backcountry wilderness if youd like. There is even the opportunity to hover over the frosty plains that are home to the polar bears. And if you happen to prefer the warmer weather you can spy on the grizzlies as they hunt salmon from the rivers.
If you are the mariner type you will love Alaska. Day cruises on the ocean are a great opportunity to sit back, hold hands, and seep in the natural beauty that Alaska presents. These day tours run out of numerous spots along the coast as well as the interior of the state. The Chena and Tanana rivers offer steamboat tours while the coastal areas run larger cruiseship-type voyages.
If you are less interested in nature and more in the bustling nightlife offered by a city you will want to stop in Anchorage. Here you can find luxurious hotels, great shopping, and wonderful restaurants. You may find this spot to be the perfect place to woo yours truly with an elegant meal with the aurora borealis, or northern lights, serving as your backdrop.
Not all couples find quiet dinner romantic. To some couples a long day of fishingsaltwater, freshwater, or ice fishing, the perfect aphrodisiac. If this is the case, then Alaska is your place.
