If you like to take pictures of architecture, then you have an unlimited amount of subjects. You can visit any town in the world or even look around your own neighborhood and find interesting subjects to shoot. Almost any camera can be used to take good photos but for more professional pictures you need a better camera. If you can afford it, buy a technical camera that will handle four by five images. A 35mm SLR camera is fine for any beginner photographer. A tripod is one item you must have for taking architectural photos. Another item you may want on your technical camera is a cable release. This enables you to take pictures without pushing the shutter button. A mirror lock is a good addition to have also. A mirror lock will reduce vibration in the camera. Study and learn how to use your camera before spending a lot of money on film or memory cards. When you are ready, then a trip will be more fun and worthwhile. Start taking pictures in your own neighborhood.

Before taking a photography trip of any kind, you will want to decide on what kind of pictures you want to take. Do you want pictures of historical monuments, street and market scenes, or cultural attractions? Maybe you want to take pictures of residential homes or corporate buildings. Maybe you want to take pictures of the buildings in downtown Chicago or the government buildings in Washington D. C. Whatever kind of pictures you want to take, planning ahead will be the best thing you can do. The time of year is very important to consider. Excessive tree shade may suggest you go to a certain area in spring or you may want to wait until the fall. Blooms may be what you want, so plan for that specific time of year. Carefully select the season for the best possible photos of your chosen area.

There are thousands of different styles of architecture and as many ways that they fit into the vast array of settings. There are deserts, mountains, cityscapes, suburbs and more. Choose a subject that is interesting. If you choose a subject that is fairly local, you can visit the area often. This will enable you to take pictures at different times of the day and in different seasons of the year. You will most likely take many, many pictures. Get used to the fact that many of your photos will not be very good. You will have some that turn out very good. Dont take just one or two pictures of your chosen subject.

Take your time in planning your trip. Be sure you have all the materials you need before you leave. A digital camera provides you with more tools. You can retouch and manipulate the photographs after they are taken. For wide buildings, you can take several adjacent photos of the same building and put them together using the stitch function. This will give you one panoramic view of your building. This will help you in case you can not get the right distance away from your subject. So, before going on a trip, learn some good photo programs for your computer.

Some architectural photographs are taken for illustrative purposes. Others are used for construction progress and others are taken just for fun. There are many reasons to shoot different types of architecture. Whatever your reason, make a shortlist of sites to shoot before you go on your trip. Get organized and your trip will be more productive and successful. Dont forget to have fun. Having fun and having a passion for this kind of photography will make your trip more pleasant and worthwhile.
